The Balearic Islands have long been a popular holiday destination for Germans.

But now they have to struggle with high numbers of corona cases.

An island is completely cordoned off.

The Balearic Government * is also worried about the steep rise in the number of corona cases: The

popular holiday island of Ibiza

has been

largely sealed off

since Saturday (January 23)

until the end of the month for the time being

.

Leaving or entering the island is only allowed for essential reasons, as the Mallorca Zeitung reports.

This includes visits to the doctor, professional activities, caring for relatives, dealing with authorities, visits to educational institutions and the like.

In order to make sure that people adhere to the stricter entry rules, the police want to keep more control at the airport and port.

Ibiza sealed off: Coronavirus mutation to blame for rising case numbers?

Ibiza experienced a steep increase in the number of corona cases, especially after the Christmas season.

While there was an incidence of 159 cases per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days around the holidays, this has

risen to around 1,970 cases

(as of January 22).

According to the Mallorca Zeitung, the R value would be 1.4, which means that an infected person infects almost one and a half more people with the virus.

With the help of

mass rapid tests

, thousands of people should be checked for Covid 19 disease over the weekend.

Allegedly there is a suspicion that the British mutation of the corona virus is responsible for the massive increase in the number of cases, as another local paper, Mallorca Magazin, writes.
