The US Senate today rejected a move by some Republican lawmakers to halt the impeachment process of the country's former president, Donald Trump, as inconsistent with the constitution.

Reuters reported that 55 senators voted to reject a demand made by Republican Senator Rand Paul to stop impeachment in exchange for the support of 45 lawmakers.

Senators were sworn in today in the second impeachment process of Trump, amid an immediate challenge to the constitutionality of the trial by Paul.

The Republican senator said he would impose a procedural vote on the trial today in the first test of how Republicans in the Senate will view the upcoming trial.

The Senate received the legislation yesterday to impeach Trump, in the context of the issue of accusing him of "inciting the rebellion" in the wake of the storming of Congress by some of his supporters on the sixth of this month, which killed 5 people.

It is expected that the Senate will begin Trump's trial during the week beginning on February 8, according to former Democratic majority leader Chuck Schumer.

Successful impeachment will require the support of two-thirds of the 100 senators who will play the role of jurors during court hearings chaired by Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy.

Most of the members of the US House of Representatives voted on the 13th of this month, including 10 Republican lawmakers, in favor of passing legislation providing for Trump to be held accountable, and thus Trump became the first president in the history of the United States to face accountability twice.

Democratic leaders emphasized that the goal of impeaching Trump, who they said represents a grave danger to the people of the United States and its democracy, is to prevent him from assuming any future government posts.
