Tung Chee-hwa pointed out that in the past, China and the United States have cooperated many times to cope with global challenges, but in recent years, China and the United States have lost this spirit of cooperation and have been replaced by resentments and worries from the United States.
He said that this fear stems from a lack of understanding of China. Many Americans have puzzling fears and resistance to the Communist government. However, if you ask the Chinese, most people think that the current political system is beneficial to the country.
He said a Harvard University survey showed that more than 90% of Chinese people agree with the government's direction and have hope for China's future, which is much higher than other countries.
He said that China has the advantages of a huge market and mature industry and logistics construction, and is ready to contribute these advantages to the global economy.
He emphasized that China has no ambition to become a hegemony, just like all countries, China will protect its interests, but at the same time believe that other countries can coexist peacefully.
He quoted President Xi Jinping yesterday (25th) urging the international community to negotiate and cooperate globally to safeguard multilateralism and solve the problems facing mankind.
He continued that the United States and China, as the two largest economies in the world, can cooperate in many aspects, including dealing with the new crown pneumonia epidemic, economic and climate change, etc. The two countries can return to normal trade relations and seek peaceful means to resolve international disputes.
