Medical specialists warn that Carvativir –– the alleged miracle drug presented by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as an alleged treatment for patients with covid-19–– “lacks scientific foundation”.

Carvativir "has not had the kind of studies that a medicine needs to be recommended to the public," said Dr. Elmer Huerta, a public health expert and CNN contributor.

For that, explained Dr. Huerta, a drug must go through preclinical studies in isolated cells and animals.

In addition to phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 clinical studies, according to the doctor.

In that sense, Dr. Huerta added that the objective of this procedure is to demonstrate its efficacy and safety.

CNN has reached out to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for their comments on Carvativir.

However, so far no response has been received.

In a televised statement this Sunday on the state channel VTV, Maduro affirmed, without presenting evidence, that Carvativir "neutralizes 100% of the coronavirus."

The questioned president defined it as a medicine manufactured in the country.

He also said that it has been approved by health authorities for its "mass production, distribution and treatment for coronavirus patients."

However, the president did not release data on the composition of the medicine or medical trials.

Neither of the procedure followed by the health authorities for its approval.

CNN has contacted the Venezuelan Ministry of Health to obtain more technical and trial information on Carvativir.

But, he has not received a reply.

"Miraculous and magical cures won't work"

María Eugenia Landaeta, head of Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital of Caracas, stated that the plant extracts "and things that they are promoting do not really have any scientific validity."

And he added that until there is a study with a good methodology that shows that this works, those "miraculous and magical cures are not going to work."

Maduro announced that this week the mass production of Carvativir will begin.

Also, a "direct" production system will be established so that all hospitals in the country have the drug "by the thousands."

He stated that "very soon" Vice President Delcy Rodríguez will hand over "personally" to the director of the WHO "all the documentation" so that he "knows and certifies this powerful antiviral."

Venezuela authorized the emergency use of the Russian vaccine against covid-19 Gam-COVID-Vac, known as Sputnik V. Although, the inoculation has not started in a massive way.

According to Maduro, vaccination will begin in April when they receive 10 million doses.

In May 2020, Maduro had launched a campaign to produce chloroquine diphosphate, a drug that he presented as an "effective drug for the treatment" of COVID-19.

This despite the fact that both that presentation and its similar, hydroxychloroquine, were already discredited as drugs to treat the new coronavirus.
