According to the Kremlin, Russia and the USA have reached an agreement on the extension of the nuclear disarmament treaty "New Start".

Corresponding diplomatic notes were exchanged today, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday evening after President Vladimir Putin spoke to US President Joe Biden on the phone.

Both sides had previously declared their willingness to extend the last disarmament agreement, which expired at the beginning of February, by five years.

The "New Start" treaty is intended to limit the amount of nuclear weapons hoarded by the US and Russia.

Most recently, the deal was about to end, but under Joe Biden a turnaround had appeared.

It was the first time Biden and Putin have spoken to each other since Biden took office as the new president.
