Corona: Juso boss Rosenthal defends herself against the general closure of schools

"We do not want to be the Corona generation": Jusochef Jessica Rosenthal criticized in the SPIEGEL top-level discussion that schools have to close in principle - but arms factories do not.

The Juso chairwoman Jessica Rosenthal has criticized the education policy of the federal and state governments in the fight against the corona pandemic.

"The right to education is an elementary right," she said in the top SPIEGEL talk with moderator Markus Feldenkirchen.

"And this importance is not recognized."

The education ministers should have used the summer for a concept, complained the 28-year-old, who is herself a teacher at a Bonn comprehensive school.

Additional staff or rooms could have been organized.

But that did not happen and it makes her angry.

Rosenthal warned against closing schools in the pandemic.

"The children lose nine months of their educational life," criticized Rosenthal.

Instead, arms factories, for example, are not closed even though they are not relevant to supply needs.

Employers are not fulfilling their obligation to provide more opportunities in the home office.

Apparently, education is currently not a priority in Germany.

"But we don't want to be the Corona generation," said Rosenthal, who was elected by the Jusos to succeed Kevin Kühnert at the beginning of the year (read an interview with her from last summer here).

The economy in Germany must be oriented differently, demanded Rosenthal and urged that the minimum wage be raised to 13 euros or even higher.

It cannot be that people, even though they are working, have to go to the authorities to top up their wages.

In the low-wage sector there is "terrible exploitation because at the end of the day nothing is left".

Rosenthal named delivery services as an example.

It should not be that a system that is based on exploitation should rise to the Dax.

The Juso boss was referring to companies like Delivery Hero.

"By not paying the right wages, your profits will increase."

A state job guarantee is also better than an unconditional basic income, as the Greens are calling for.

Jobs could be created at the local level, for example for social projects or more horticulture.

"There is no limit to the mind game," said Rosenthal.

More social interaction is necessary.

Rosenthal also spoke out in favor of the state becoming more involved in companies like Thyssen, for example.

Steel is an important export product, which is why, for example, the production of C02-neutral steel must be promoted for ecological reasons.
