Four years of Donald Trump also meant: four years no animal in the White House. The Bidens think differently. With "Champ" and "Major" two dogs moved in. And that's not enough for the first lady.

Watch out, it can be heard clearly.

While the new president is completing his press conference - a dog barks in the background.

Or two dogs.

The press photographers catch the new residents on the lawn: The four pet-free years in the White House are now finally over.

On the weekend there was the »Breaking News« for all dog lovers: The First Lady tweeted the official entry of the shepherd dogs »Champ« and »Major« into the White House and presented the first official photos.

A flood of congratulations followed.

Among the well-wishers were not only high-ranking democrats - but above all other four-legged friends.

And these are the “First Dogs”: “Champ” has been a member of the Biden family for 10 years - he came into contact with big politics during the Obama administration.

The young "major" was adopted in 2018 from a shelter in Wilmington, Delaware.

"Major" is not only a trained rescue dog - but also officially the first dog from an animal shelter to move into the White House.

Reason enough for the animal shelter to hold an »Indoguration Party« - with appropriate songs.

The history of pets in the White House has a long tradition - as the historical society documents on its website: They even made it into oil paintings, like here with First Lady Grace Coolidge.

»Millie«, the dog of the Bush family, should have made it to the greatest fame.

"Millie" had a litter of six pups while she was at the White House.

Her dog observations from the White House, written down by the first lady, became a children's book bestseller.

It didn't always have to be a dog, though: Clinton's cat "Socks" was also photogenic - and the first stray cat to be rescued to the White House by a presidential couple.

Overall, dogs definitely had priority here.

The fact that Trump broke with this tradition brought him headwinds from animal lovers.

Biden used Trump's lack of empathy for the loyal four-legged friends in the final spurt of the election campaign.

Even before they moved to the White House, Biden's dogs made public appearances as the bearers of Christmas greetings - with a consciously inclusive message to old and young.

The hearts of dog lovers should open up.

But: Attention all cat lovers - there could still be a happy and conciliatory surprise waiting:

They too deserved a presence in the White House: the cats did enough hard campaign work.
