SPIEGEL:

You are the only directly elected SPD member in the Thuringian state parliament.

How is it that you are the only one?

Matthias Hey:

To be honest, I don't know either, you'd have to ask the local voters that.

I travel a lot, talk to people every day, am a member of many clubs here, and as far as possible, also active there.

Perhaps many say to each other: I know him, I choose him!

To person

Matthias Hey

, born in Erfurt in 1970, has been a member of the SPD in the Thuringian state parliament since 2009.

He has headed the parliamentary group since 2014.

He is the only directly elected SPD MP there.

He has been driving his Trabi for over 30 years.

SPIEGEL:

How do you manage to keep in touch with citizens during the pandemic?

Hey:

My citizens' office is always open, every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Like a shop.

We even have more inquiries than before Corona.

Now come people who have regulatory issues.

Tradespeople who say: I can't cope with what kind of form Scholz has given out.

Can you talk to the Thuringian Aufbaubank?

Then there are the young mothers who want to know whether they are entitled to emergency care.

And older people get in touch, upset that their neighbor does not wear a mask when shopping.

Even citizens of the Reich come to my office who openly profess themselves and explain to me that everything around us is just an artificial state structure.

They also want to talk to me.
