Heirs to the bruised memory of the Harkis, these former soldiers recruited by the French army during the Algerian war, we cannot be silent after having read the report of the historian Benjamin Stora, about "memory questions relating to the colonization and the Algerian war ”, given to the President of the Republic on January 20, 2021. If we can salute some of its aspects, this work surprises and upsets us, as the Harkis find themselves, in this document, reduced to the minimum portion, and, above all, evoked in a tendentious way accompanied by significant omissions.
From page 8 of the document, Benjamin Stora mentions the
“cruel reprisals against the Harkis”
in Algeria at the end of the war.
The term
“retaliation”
is not neutral.
It validates the thesis used by the Algerian power and the historians who are subservient to it: if harkis were massacred, it is because they themselves had engaged in abuses.
This totally abusive generalization
