What a joy that the US Postal Service (USPS) has released a series of stamps honoring the Cuban-American painter Emilio Sánchez on the centenary of his birth!

What an honor for Latin Americans in general and Cubans in particular!

I did not know much about his art, but a good friend recommended him to me and I immediately fell in love with his painting, especially his Casitas that reminded me a lot of a small house that we had in Long Island and that –because it was so small and cozy– we called it like this: La Casita.

And when I interviewed him — I worked at Univision for the television shows “Mujer” and “Fama y Fortuna” - I was delighted to learn about his style, his fabulous work and his personality.

Sánchez was a charming “raconteur” (narrator) and his anecdotes captivated me.

The four works chosen for the stamp series were “Los Toldos” (1973), “Ty's Place” (1976), “En el Souk” (1972) and “Untitled (Little window ajar)”, from 1981.

“Sánchez explored the effects of light and shadow to emphasize the abstract geometry of his subjects.

His artwork encompasses his Cuban heritage as well as his long life in New York, ”the Postal Service said on its website on January 15.

A well deserved honor, which is part of the series of stamps that are issued in honor of great artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol, among others.

With so much beauty, do not you want to write letters in the style "of before" and use these precious stamps?

Personally, I have a small oil painting of a Cuban flag painted by Emilio Sánchez (I bought it at a charity auction), and the artist proof of the painting of a little white house that he lovingly dedicated to me as La Casita de Mari.

Emilio Sánchez has been a great source of pride for Cubans and all Latin Americans, many of whom will now be able to see his work.
