The prefect of Mayotte announced on Wednesday the confinement of three municipalities on the French island located in the Indian Ocean after the "
brutal deterioration
" of the health situation marked by an increase in cases of the South African variant of the coronavirus.

Faced with this context which has deteriorated suddenly over the past 24 hours, in perfect agreement with the Regional Health Agency, Jean-François Colombet, prefect of Mayotte, (...) has decided to completely confine the municipalities Pamandzi, Dzaoudzi-Labattoir and Bouéni for an indefinite period
”, we read in a press release.
All businesses will be closed with the exception of establishments selling food and pharmacies, and people who want to move will have to present a certificate, details the text.
As part of the total confinement which concerns the town of Bouéni and those of Petite Terre, "
primary and secondary schools will all be closed from Thursday, January 28, 2021 in the evening, given the worrying increase in incidence rate observed in young people under the age of 14
, ”adds the prefecture.
Since the beginning of January, the Covid-19 epidemic has experienced a rebound in Mayotte.
A first case carrying the South African variant was detected on January 15.
The number of cases rose to 13 on January 24.
Today, 50 new carriers have been revealed, according to the prefecture, which indicates that a first case carrying the British variant was discovered on January 27.
