The Russian Foreign Ministry considered that the European Union's actions regarding the situation around the politician Alexei Navalny were the culmination of unfriendly steps, which casts doubts on the possibility of establishing further cooperation between Moscow and Brussels.
"The culmination of the unfriendly steps was the measures related to the so-called poisoning of Navalny, which cast doubt on the possibility of building further interaction with the European Union," said a statement issued by the ministry, reported by Sputnik.
Last week, Russian security forces arrested Navalny upon his arrival at Sheremetyevo airport from Germany, in implementation of a previous judicial order issued against him for fraud.
In its statement, the ministry pointed out that despite the recognition of the inability to implement the so-called “five principles” of relations with Russia, during the year the European Union members could not start work on rethinking and continued the policy of sanctions and subjected our citizens and businesses to illegal restrictions.
In October of last year, the European Union issued a decision to impose sanctions against six Russians and a scientific institute in connection with the Navalny case, and they were prevented from entering the European Union.
