One-third of corona patients - children: "Do not know if there will be long-term effects"

The rate of infection up to the age of 17 from the entire population jumped from a few percent in the first wave to 35% at present, of which two are in critical condition.

The Ministry of Health blames the British strain for the rapid spread, and has asked pediatric associations to urgently discuss opening up the education system.

The third wave of the corona plague struck more strongly young and old, compared to previous waves that mainly affected adults and the elderly.

The Ministry of Health is pointing the finger of blame at the British mutation, which has caused a rapid rise in morbidity and made the current wave extremely difficult so far.

The ministry's data showed that 35% of active patients are children up to the age of 17, while in the previous wave the rate was 25% and in the first wave only a few percent.

Although the corona has become more contagious because of the British strain, it is probably no more deadly to children.

At present, the number of children hospitalized in the country stands at less than 25 patients, most of them in a mild condition.

Only two children are currently hospitalized, and are in the intensive care unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem in a very serious condition with lung injury.

They are resuscitated and anesthetized, and the medical staffs are fighting for their lives.

A long discussion about the morbidity of children.

Yesterday (Tuesday) there was a long discussion in "Magen Israel" with the participation of the corona commissioner Nachman Ash, who dealt with childhood illness and wanted to see if it is only wider or more deadly.

The pediatric associations were asked to immediately issue position papers explaining the issue, as well as the possibility of opening up the education system in the shadow of immigration.

"The numbers of severely ill children have risen because the British mutation is catching on faster and reaching more people," he explained to Walla!

NEWS Prof. Tzachi Grossman, secretary general of the Pediatric Association. "In England, too, they thought she was attacking more children, and then they found out it was not true.

What we are seeing is the 'law of large numbers' - there is a larger number of patients so it also reaches more children.

"Children are no longer exposed to the new strain, they are simply part of the spread of the plague."

Does their disease look different from adults?

"In children there are two forms of severe morbidity. The first as in adults, in the normal corona manifested by shortness of breath and pulmonary embolism. The second form is similar to Kawasaki disease, which characterizes children and looks like a heart attack."

On the other hand, a new and preliminary study in England raises concerns that the British strain is not only more contagious, but also 30% more violent.

This is the only evidence, but the Ministry of Health is following it with concern.

However, the pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Modern have already announced that their vaccines are effective against the mutation.

In the shadow of the disease, the ministry yesterday issued a directive that children up to the age of 16 who are at risk for a serious illness can be vaccinated against the corona virus.

This is not yet a completely approved decision, and it must go through Dr. Boaz Lev, chairman of the priority committee.

In the directive, the ministry stated that the decision to vaccinate the age range is preferable to non-action, even within the existing risks of vaccination at ages for which there is insufficient information on dosage, efficacy and safety.

The Ministry of Health is preparing for the reopening of the education system.

Prof. Grossman estimates that the high rate of infection among children will not change the position regarding studies, which are expected to open in 12 days after the extension of the closure for a week.

Only 34% of the teaching staff were vaccinated, can the education system be opened?

"This is really a big disappointment. I do not understand where all the teachers are. The fact that only 34% were vaccinated is a very disturbing fact. "For matriculation and we are in the immunization stages. For him, the balance shifts between fourth and fifth grade, because we treat preschool and the lower grades as one piece."

Grossman added that recovery rates among children remained high.

"There is no difference in morbidity between the different age groups, we see the same disease from the age of 0-17, Kawasaki syndrome is more common in the young ages," he said.

"Not a disease of the elderly as we thought"

Towards the end of the week, the genetic flooring of the children hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem is expected to be completed, and it will be known whether they have contracted another strain of the disease.

Dr. Uri Polak, director of the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital, described the situation in the ward that everyone is looking up to. "The four children who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit are in infancy - ten days to two years.

The two who remained in the hospital have background illnesses for up to two years, and suffer from a respiratory illness as a result of the mutation, "he said.

"Very few children will start hard."

"This is not a disease of the elderly as we thought in the first wave, there are also 30-year-old patients who are seriously ill. There are also more young patients in the world. Acme's average age has dropped from 59 in the previous waves to 46 in the current wave."

Children recover differently from adults?

"In mild and moderate morbidity they recover faster than adults. Most children will be asymptomatic. Those who develop symptoms will experience them mildly, and a lower number in moderation. Very few children will still start severely. "In children, we do not yet have a perspective, so we also do not know if it will have long-term effects."

How are the visits to the children's corona disease conducted?

"The presence of parents in the Corona ward is the same as their presence in other wards of children. The considerations of profit versus loss from their attendance - the benefit outweighs the dangers. Many times the parents recover or are vaccinated. "The children without attendance are very unhealthy and inhumane. It is necessary and existential for them - it is not possible to leave a minor without a parent."
