Tegernsee Valley - In times of increased risk of infection, many, especially senior citizens, shy away from daily shopping in the supermarket.

An alternative to cooking at home that has existed for years is “Meals on Wheels” by the BRK district association in Miesbach.

Lisa Leitner (36), who is responsible for the delivery service at the Red Cross, confirms that the offer has recently been in greater demand.

With her, our employee Ingrid Versen, who tested the offer for two weeks, clarified the most important questions on behalf of other interested parties.

Ms. Leitner, how many customers do you now supply with “Meals on Wheels”?

In the district there are around 80 who take advantage of our hot lunch menu, and another 70 to 80 who we supply with frozen food.

Do you have to be a BRK member to take advantage of your offer or are there age limits?

No, people of all ages who want to afford our delivery can take advantage of our offer.

The BRK employees deliver the selected dishes free of charge every day using a warming box that remains with the customer.

If the customer is absent, lunch can also be left in front of the front door, where it will stay warm for a while.

How do you have to imagine the delivery?

The customer can put together the menu himself from an 81-page catalog at home and then order it from the BRK in Miesbach.

Potential buyers are spoiled for choice, because 200 different dishes are offered, all of which are also described.

Among other things, there are light foods, hearty foods, pastries, soups, stews, meat and fish dishes.

We have an oven in our car so that lunch arrives really hot at the customer and can be consumed immediately.

There are also areas that you cannot provide you with hot lunches.

What are the alternatives?

For example, you can use our frozen “feel-good offer” from the entire catalog.

For example, we deliver seven menus with four salads and five desserts in a box.

High-quality ingredients from the company apetito, with which the Bavarian Red Cross has been working for many years, are used.

These are then shock frozen at down to minus 40 degrees.

In this way vitamins and nutrients are retained.

What about people with food intolerances?

Extra requests are welcome - from lactose or gluten-free, to reduced calories or salt, to pureed for people with swallowing difficulties.

It is prepared in a normal household microwave or in the oven.

Warm lunch now also in the north of the district

The north of the district has been largely left empty-handed for a warm lunch on wheels.

The Landhaus an der Au in Holzkirchen has a delivery service that does not cover higher capacities.

The BRK district association has now acquired a third vehicle with an integrated heating oven and also serves interested parties in Otterfing, Holzkirchen, Warngau and Waakirchen.

So far, only the offer of delivery of frozen food has been valid here.

The prices for a warm main course range between around 8.50 and 11.50 euros.

Those in need can inquire about a grant or reimbursement from the competent authority.

As BRK district manager Robert Kießling reports, customers and often their relatives too are happy if someone comes by once a day - for a little advice, but also to check that things are going a little bit.

Because if something is wrong, “we also have the opportunity to react quickly,” says Kießling.

Incidentally, they had agreed with the Landhaus an der Au in advance.
