Is the alternate course now for graduates?

The Freising schools have still not received any written instructions.

Only one school knows.

  • Prime Minister Markus Söder announced over a week ago that graduates should start alternating classes from February 1st.

  • The schools have not yet received a corresponding letter from the Ministry of Culture.

  • Only one school in the Freising district already knows how things will go from Monday.

Freising

- Regardless of which school you ask, the answer is always the same: "We check every hour several times whether a letter from the Ministry of Culture (KMS) has arrived." Even though Prime Minister Markus Söder announced more than a week ago that there are still no specific instructions for graduates from next Monday.

The State Vocational School Center Freising has not yet received an official KMS either, but so-called advance information, as the letter from the Ministry of Culture is entitled.

"It says that the alternating lessons are only intended for those students who have already passed a final or chamber examination by March 26th," said school principal Daniel Spreng to the FT when asked.

“But we don't have this case.” For the Freising vocational school center, this means: “We will not have any face-to-face classes from next Monday.” This is also important information for the companies in which the vocational students are employed.

FOS / BOS knocks at the Ministry

Spreng is satisfied with the distance training via MS Teams, which has now been taking place for over a month.

"After investing so much time in the run-up to the fall in getting the system up and running, it's now working well."

“We don't know what happens next, and that won't change until Thursday either,” says Roswitha Stichlmeyr, head of the FOS / BOS in Freising.

A group of school principals have now turned to the ministry themselves.

"We wish and hope that the Ministry will give the schools more freedom in deciding whether distance or alternating courses will take place."

Dear distance teaching

She herself has a clear idea of how things should continue in the coming week.

“We want to keep the distance teaching because it goes well with us,” she says.

In the case of alternate lessons, the students who would have to stay at home would not be left behind because the lessons that take place in the classroom are broadcast live to their homes.

“But it's still an insane additional burden for the teachers when they have to get into the hybrid.” That would have been shown by the experience in autumn.

At that time there were partial quarantines in individual classes and therefore also hybrid lessons.

And there is something else that speaks against face-to-face teaching, even if it only affects half of the more than 400 FOS / BOS graduates: "Then the buses are full again because not every young person has their own car," emphasizes Stichlmeyr.

"And we can't really want that."

Switching lessons the "worst variant"

Because of the organization of the school buses, even the district office has already called in the Camerloher grammar school.

“They asked whether we might already know more,” reports headmistress Andrea Bliese of the surprising call.

But for them, too, it continues to be: be patient.

"We are now used to waiting three to four days for a KMS, but eight days - wow!" She herself considers distance learning to be the better alternative for older students when full face-to-face teaching is not possible.

"In this case, alternating lessons are the worst option."
