Cuba is called Cuba because Columbus was a Cuban.
At least that's how the legend goes in Cuba, a country town in the Alentejo region, two hours' drive south-east of Lisbon.
A statue of the world discoverer is therefore in the center of the town, and yet it looks as if it would make Cuba a certain notoriety for other reasons.
No other district in Portugal shows such a high 7-day incidence of Covid-19 cases: it was 6224 on Monday.
According to the information from the national health department DGS (Direçao-Geral da Saúde).
In contrast, Saxony's hotspots would be true climatic health resorts.
Cuba's city council is understandably appalled.
The spread numbers are wrong, "out of date and inappropriate," it says in a statement, they refer to 14-day values, in fact there were only 69 infections in the past week, with a population of just under 5000 at the last count .
Mayor Joao Português has himself filmed in front of empty hospital beds and warns of »misinterpretations« that could damage Cuba's reputation.
The situation is worrying, but after all, Cuba is an area of 172 square kilometers.
And there the risk of infection is actually much lower than in a big city, for example.
He worries about the reputation of his community: "We have set up a field hospital and hired three new helpers."
