Berlin (CNN) -

Germany's vaccine commission has recommended that the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford not be administered to people over 65, the German Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

The Standing Committee on Immunization (STIKO) of Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the country's leading public health authority, has found that there is insufficient data on the efficacy of the vaccine for this age group, according to a statement from the Ministry.

'Due to the small number of study participants in the age group ≥65 years, no conclusions can be drawn regarding efficacy and safety in the elderly.

Therefore, STIKO currently recommends this vaccine only for people 18 to 64 years old, ”the panel said in its recommendation.

The UK, whose regulator approved the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine nearly a month ago, has been dosing people over 65.

In its report, the regulator, the MHRA, said that there was "limited information available on efficacy in participants aged 65 and over, although there is nothing to suggest a lack of protection."

The EU has ordered 300 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which could be approved for use by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as early as Friday, with the option to purchase an additional 100 million doses.

An AstraZeneca spokesperson said it expected a regulatory decision from the EMA soon.

"Reports that the efficacy of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine is low in adults over 65 years is not an accurate reflection of the totality of the data," the spokesperson said.

“The latest analyzes support the efficacy in this age group, which we hope will be published by the EMA in the next few days.

The most recent publication in the Lancet has shown that older adults showed strong immune responses to the vaccine, with 100% of older adults generating spike-specific antibodies after the second dose.
