Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, reiterated the necessity of a political solution to the crisis in Libya, noting that the Libyans have a "chance for peace" for the first time since the destructive Western aggression against their country.
Russia Today quoted Nebenzia as saying during a Security Council session on Libya that “Russia has always called for the settlement of the Libyan crisis by political and diplomatic means ... We would like to point out that for the first time since the devastating Western aggression against Libya, whose tenth anniversary this year comes, the Libyans have a real opportunity. To achieve peace ”.
He added, "We are convinced that all international players who have influence over the various Libyan forces should urge them to engage constructively with the aim of finding middle solutions to the existing problems."
Nebenzia stated that "Moscow welcomes the transfer of armed confrontation to the arena of negotiations," noting at the same time that "the situation is still fragile, as the implementation of the terms of the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva last October has stalled."
Since the NATO aggression against it in 2011, Libya has been witnessing a state of chaos and insecurity in light of the proliferation of weapons and terrorist organizations, while two main parties are currently fighting over the authorities, namely the Government of National Accord and the parallel government operating in eastern Libya supported by the House of Representatives and the Libyan army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. .
