As part of a decree signed this Sunday in Puerto Rico, in which a state of emergency is declared due to gender violence, Governor Pedro Pierluisi announced that the Office of the Ombudsman for Women (OPM) will receive US $ 654,000 to hire researchers, psychologists, social workers, lawyers, statisticians and carry out educational campaigns.

“We are more than committed to eradicating violence against women, because it is a social evil that affects all of our families.

It is up to all of us to combat it with greater awareness and effectiveness.

We are in a state of emergency, and as governor I will do everything in my power to provide the necessary resources, "Pierluisi said through a statement.

The decree seeks to improve "protection, prevention and guidance against gender violence and establish programs to support victims."

According to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, in 2020 there were 15 murders due to gender violence;

11 women and 4 men.

The decree also establishes the appointment of a compliance officer who will respond to the governor to supervise, follow up and monitor the implementation of the plan.

In addition, the Committee for the Prevention, Support, Rescue and Education of Gender Violence, the PARE Committee, made up of 17 members and three representatives of gender violence organizations will be created.

Another of the provisions orders the creation of a mobile phone application that helps victims of gender violence to request emergency help, hiding the message sent to protect them.

In October 2020, the then governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez, had signed a decree that established a series of protocols to combat violence against women.
