Carlos de la Fuente was born in Reynosa, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and came to the US when he was only 6 years old.

Since then he has lived in the city of Dallas, Texas.

In 1990, he decided to open a greengrocer.

"It's what I've done all my life," De la Fuente told CNN en Español.

Later, the business became a piñatería and currently ABC Party HQ offers supplies for all kinds of parties in the Bishop Heights neighborhood of Dallas.

But the most coveted item by his customers in recent days is Senator Bernie Sanders' piñata, an independent from Vermont, and his knitted gloves.

«I am always aware of the news and up to date with what is happening.

And that's where my ideas come from, ”says De la Fuente.

Sanders, sitting idly in a jacket and blue mask during President Joe Biden's inauguration, immediately became a viral meme.

The senator's image is also sold on T-shirts and mugs.

Even the woman who knitted the gloves Sanders was wearing said she has received many requests from people wanting to buy a pair.

De la Fuente says the popularity of the Bernie Sanders piñata exploded from the moment it was finished.

“Wednesday was the first day we took it out, when we finished it.

And we can no longer cope, "says De la Fuente.

"We have orders until the end of February."

The piñata sells for US $ 100. According to De la Fuente, it takes at least five days to produce and deliver it.

This is not the first time that his original piñatas have generated curiosity among the residents of the area.

“Four years ago the idea of making a Donald Trump one came up and I sold thousands.

In March 2020, the idea came to me to create the coronavirus piñata, which was also very successful, ”says De la Fuente.

ABC Party HQ, like many other businesses, was also affected by the covid-19 pandemic.

Its owner indicates that at the peak of the health emergency he had to close the business for 10 weeks.

"Like everyone else, it has affected us in one way or another, but we looked for things to keep us here, even though it was difficult," says De la Fuente.

"The community has accepted us quite well, we have been in this corner for 30 years, the community cares about you and wants to support us," De la Fuente told CNN en Español.
