Kosovo's Foreign Ministry announced tonight (Friday) that the country will sign an agreement establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, in the presence of foreign ministers, this coming Monday.
Kosovo Foreign Minister Melissa Harding said in a short video released by the Foreign Ministry: "Kosovo marks a new phase in relations with Israel, a legacy of a long-standing relationship between the peoples. Despite the difficulties and challenges that have plagued our nations, we have never given up. We have lost hope. "
"When Jews were persecuted in World War II, they found refuge among the Albanians, where the brave friendship between our peoples was born. That is where our deep historical connection lies. As a generous people and believing people, we stood by the Jews in their most difficult moments in history," the minister said.
In September, Israel officially recognized Kosovo as a state, as part of a deal signed at the White House between Serbia and Kosovo, while Kosovo undertook to lease Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and open a representative office there. If the move does take place, Kosovo will be the country with the Muslim majority in the world to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
