Heavy rain, warm wind and massive snowmelt on top of that: the ingredients for a flood situation in the Miesbach district are there.

The DWD warns of storms.

Update Friday, January 29th, 6 p.m .:

Rough wind accompanied by heavy rain showers: The thaw has also hit the Tegernsee valley in full.

A major flood situation - as of Friday afternoon - is not to be feared.

Local flooding on smaller streams is, however, quite possible.

As Kreisbrandrat Anton Riblinger reports, the Dürnbach fire brigade, for example, moved out to remove snow and ice in bodies of water and thus ensure that the meltwater could drain away.

In Bad Wiessee, a cellar was also overflowed.

Riblinger assures us that the situation will also be closely monitored at the weekend.

The severe weather warning from the German Weather Service is valid until Sunday night.

Original article from Thursday January 28th:

District

- At first, the thick snow cover in many places in the Miesbach district still looks like a sponge.

It literally soaks up the rain.

But at some point the barrel is full - and the water has to drain away.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns citizens of the district on Thursday, January 28, of a “severe thaw”.

There is even a storm warning for the southern part.

“With positive temperatures and persistent rain, the snow cover thaws heavily.

The flow rates reach between 70 l / m² and 100 l / m², ”write the meteorologists.

Floods in streams and rivers are possible, as are flooded streets.

Air mass limit causes a lot of rain and snowmelt

Once again, an air mass boundary is responsible for the heavy rainfall, which separates mild air from the southwest from colder air in the northeast.

While the district has mostly been on the cold side in the past few weeks and has thus partially received heavy snowfalls, the border has now shifted significantly towards the northeast.

Means: Mild air, wind and lots of rain.

Depending on the weather model, between 50 and 75 liters per square meter are simulated up to and including Sunday.

Together with the water masses stored in the snow cover, a considerable runoff is to be feared.

The Kachelmannwetter portal speaks on Twitter of a "flushing of snow" in southern and western Germany.

The flushing of snow up to the high altitudes of the low mountain ranges has arrived in the south and west.

In the Black Forest up to the top now rain.

Flood intelligence service observes the situation

The Bavarian flood intelligence service is also carefully monitoring the situation.

"From Thursday, a thaw combined with extensive rainfalls can be expected," the experts write.

Due to rising temperatures, rising water levels are expected on many rivers.

There is currently no detailed information on whether, when and how much the levels rise in the Miesbach district.

The last time there was a major flood event in the Miesbach district at the beginning of August 2020.
