Rescue operation for the Schluifelder Moor

Dredging in the nature reserve seems unusual.

In this case, however, it was about protecting nature.

At the beginning of January, the Starnberg District Office had the long-planned bed sill built into the Bulachgraben in the Schluifelder Moor in Wörthsee.

"This prevents excessive drainage of the bog water and ensures a medium water level in the nature reserve," the authority said in a press release.

Wörthsee - Only the name "Schluifelder Moor" is reminiscent of the "Schluisee", which was once there.

The lake has completely disappeared since the Middle Ages due to increasing drainage measures.

The Schluifelder Moor, which has been under nature protection since the 1960s and is a refuge for rare plant and insect species, is now expanding in its place.

“This paradise was threatened by the ongoing drainage, reinforced by the climate changes of the past decades,” said spokeswoman Barbara Beck from the district administration.

The two-day use of a bog excavator, which built sheet piling into a sleeper, has now helped.

Cornelia Siuda, who is responsible for the “Bayern Moore” climate protection program in the Upper Bavarian government, explains the difficulty: “It had to be precisely coordinated that the water level in the bog cannot reach the level of the cellars in the further circumference.”

With the implemented measure, the peat moss can now grow again.

"This not only preserves the ecosystem in the long term, the renatured moor also has an important function in reducing CO²," said the district office.

This could save around 315 tons each year.

The project was carried out by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the District Office in close cooperation with nature conservation authorities and the Water Management Office.
