Some of the Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram nearly seven years ago managed to escape captivity, the father of one of the girls told CNN.

Nearly 300 girls were taken prisoner in the terrorist organization's assault on the Nigerian village in 2014, and more than half of them were released and fled over the years.

It is still unclear how many of them escaped in the latter case.

Halima Ali Mayinga, one of more than a hundred young women still defined as missing, called her father and informed him that she and other girls had escaped from Boko Haram soldiers yesterday.

"She asked me, 'Is this my dad?'

"Then she burst into tears. There was a lot of crying and I did not hear her well. I cried too. I did not think I would hear from her again," Ali Mayinga said.

"The whole family is so happy. Our house is full of people celebrating with us."

Mayinga added that he had not yet had time to have a proper conversation with his daughter, after the first conversation, which came from a phone belonging to a security official, ended quickly due to her emotional state.

However, he said there was no danger to the girls and the Nigerian military was supervising them.

Sumyari Povara, who was the caretaker of the girls released in 2017, said that Halima Mayinga is the step-sister of Mariam Ali Mayinga, who was rescued by soldiers in 2016, with a baby in her arms giving birth to Commander Boko Haram.

"They are very close. She used to cry because of her sister often," he said.

"There was a lot of crying and I didn't hear her well."

In 2014, militiamen stormed a boarding school in the Nigerian village of Chibok and abducted 276 girls.

The incident caused a stir around the world and led to an international campaign calling for their release.

Dozens of girls fled shortly after the abduction.

Another girl was found in May 2016 when she came out of a forest in the country and called for help.

Boko Haram released 21 girls to the Nigerian government following negotiations in 2016.

A year later, another 82 girls were released in a prisoner exchange deal between the terrorist organization and the government that took place in the capital Abuja.

Since then, there has been no further news regarding the fate of the 112 young women who remained in captivity.
