Students are vaccinated at Munich clinics, seniors die in rural areas: How does that fit together?

Seniors die every day in the homes in Bavaria because they have not yet been vaccinated.

Student assistants are already vaccinated at the large clinics.

A crooked picture, but one that is apparently just as wanted.

  • The

    large clinics in Bavaria

    are so well

    supplied

    with

    corona vaccine

that they are already vaccinating student assistants and other staff without patient contact.

  • In the Bavarian cities and districts, however, there is a

    fight for every vaccination dose

    - small district clinics and senior citizens in the homes are still hopelessly undersupplied.

    Not to mention

    the over

    80s

    at home.

  • The

    Bavarian Ministry of Health

    sees no problem in this.

When Sebastian H. ** gets the vaccination appointment *, he has to frown for a moment.

Now?

In January?

Am I not taking someone else's vaccine?

H. really does not belong to the much-cited first priority group.

He happened to have a desk job as a student employee in the

Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich

and was assigned a vaccination appointment via that.

"I've already thought about whether I should do that now." A colleague then convinced him.

Some of the nursing staff did not come, so there was so much left.

And then there were your own thoughts.

"If I refuse that now, will everyone else be vaccinated at some point, except me?" So he went.

At the same time, the

corona virus

breaks out

in

nursing homes

across Bavaria

because the facilities are still not vaccinated.

As recommended by the Robert Koch Institute *,

vaccinations are still

used during a

corona outbreak

in order to contain the disease.

For many seniors that comes too late.

They were already infected with Covid-19 * and are dying.

The 19 deaths in the Ebersberg district * are the youngest of many examples.

A student is vaccinated while seniors die in their beds for not getting it on time.

How can that be?

Corona vaccine distribution in Bavaria: a long administrative journey

The corona vaccine * is distributed throughout Bavaria by the

State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL).

The amount is based on the population proportion of the Bavarian administrative districts, writes the local press office on request.

And further:

"The further fine distribution to the individual users within the administrative districts is the responsibility of the coordinators at the governments, whereby they take into account not only the proportion of the population within their administrative district, but also special needs, such as those of the hospitals, at their own discretion and priority and examination of the requirements."

Corona vaccine in Bavaria: Large clinics are supplied separately

In other words: Not only the

vaccination centers

in the Bavarian

districts

and

urban districts

receive

allocations

.

The

big hospitals

are their own vaccination centers and as such get their own share.

The LGL further writes in its statement: “Basically, when the vaccinations began in December 2020, the Ministry of Health planned to include the

university clinics in the fine distribution

.” And this “consideration” was apparently quite generous.

4000 vaccination doses distributed on the right of the Isar: "Herd immunity as soon as possible"

3,600 employees of

the clinic on the right of the Isar have already received a

first vaccination

, around 460 according to the clinic already a second.

That makes up almost

two thirds of

the entire workforce.

The clinic justifies the

high need

for vaccines in this early phase with the aim of achieving herd immunity as quickly as possible.

Also with a view to corona outbreaks in other houses.

An entire hospital in Berlin was recently quarantined to stop an internal outbreak.

“Such measures can lead to massive local supply bottlenecks in the health sector.” Now there are also other hospitals in Munich.

In many

counties

there is only

one clinic

.

For example

Miesbach

.

There is only the district

hospital Agatharied *

, which does not have the luxury of direct deliveries, but is dependent on the district's own vaccination center *.

“A lot of pressure is built up,” says Thomas Straßmüller *, the medical coordinator of the same.

The doctors point an accusing finger at the Munich clinics.

Rumor has it in Agatharied that a large, well-known house has already been completely vaccinated.

And for a long time, local colleagues only had vaccination doses for around a hundred employees, a fraction of the workforce.

Corona vaccination regulation clearly gives priority

But it is actually

prescribed

by the

Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO)

, on which the

vaccination ordinance of the Federal Ministry of Health

is based.

In hospitals, only personnel with a very

high risk of exposure should be

vaccinated

in the first phase

, especially in

intensive care units

and

emergency rooms

.

The same goes for staff who deal a lot with

vulnerable groups

, such as cancer patients.

The rest of the time actually not.

Clinics interpret corona vaccination rules differently

And that little word “actually” is the problem.

Because the vaccination ordinance can be interpreted differently.

Nobody wants to be quoted.

But the hospitals, so we learned from confidential discussions with several large clinics, see it this way: Every employee has somehow contact with vulnerable groups and at the same time is exposed to a higher risk of infection.

That is why - actually - every employee belongs to the Prio 1 group.

Also the canteen help, also the administration and also Sebastian H., our student desk culprit from the beginning of the story.

In Agatharied the pressure seems to have had an effect.

On Tuesday, the hospital announced in a euphoric press release “Hospital is rolling up its sleeves” that

240 of around 1200 employees

have now been vaccinated.

At least a fifth.

They can only dream of the vaccination rates at the large Munich clinics.

Corona vaccinations in Bavaria: why do the clinics get so much vaccine?

The fact that the large clinics are now registering such large amounts of vaccinations for this reason is one thing.

That they also get it while the nursing homes haven't even been vaccinated is another.

It is distributed by the LGL, says the Bavarian

Ministry of Health

.

Yes, that's right, says the

LGL

, but only roughly.

The

district governments

will distribute them precisely

.

How much vaccine did the hospitals get directly?

Government is silent

We would have liked to know from the Upper Bavarian government how many hospitals in Upper Bavaria are directly supplied with vaccines.

As well as how much vaccine each of these hospitals got.

But she does not reveal that.

The higher vaccination quota at the hospitals can be explained by the fact that these are "systemically relevant" in the pandemic.

The Ministry of Health adds: "From the reported data, we can see that the vaccines in the clinics are handled very responsibly." The spokesman for the ministry does not give any specific figures.

Corona vaccination in Munich: Naked numbers speak for themselves

The published figures remain.

With a view to Munich, they speak for themselves.

The people in the metropolis outside the hospitals have received

11,800 vaccinations

so far.

9,800 vaccination doses

were given to the Munich clinics, which, like Agatharied in the Miesbach district, do not receive any direct deliveries.

In contrast, the

4,000 vaccine doses

stand for the

right of the Isar

with its almost

6,000 employees

. ***

That hardly

anyone

in Bavaria dares to predict when the

over 80-year-olds will

finally get their turn, who, by the way, are - actually - at the top of the vaccination ordinance of the federal government, can be understood from this numerical theory.

In the Miesbach district, not even the old people's and nursing homes are fully vaccinated.

Straßmüller: “The declared goal is that all old people's and nursing homes have their first and second vaccination by the end of the month.” Straßmüller can only laugh tiredly about the declared goal of herd immunity, which appears almost within reach on the right bank of the Isar.

"Agatharied would like that too."

** The name has been changed and known to the editors.

*** The fact that the right of the Isar is used here as an example has to do with the fact that we kindly received the exact figures from the hospital.

According to the current state of our research, it can be assumed that the vaccination rate for all direct vaccine recipients is also high.

The hospital and the Ministry of Health also point out that if employees fail to attend vaccination appointments at short notice, the thawed doses must be vaccinated quickly and it can also happen that employees with a lower priority are given them before the vaccine is thrown away got to.

This was not the case with our student Sebastian H.

He got his appointment one week in advance.
