The former Greens federal spokesman, member of the Bundestag and Greens co-founder Wilhelm Knabe is dead. The federal party announced on Saturday, citing Knabe's family: “We mourn Wilhelm Knabe.
With him, our party has lost one of its co-founders and formative minds from the early years. "
Knabe was central to the environmental and ecological movement and played a key role in shaping the Greens.
"We all have a lot to thank him for."
According to the North Rhine-Westphalian state association of the Greens, the boy died at the age of 97.
Knabe was a founding member of the state association in 1979 and then became its first state chairman.
"Afterwards, Knabe was also federal spokesman for the Greens and from 1987 to 1990 a member of the Bundestag."
The two regional leaders Mona Neubaur and Felix Banaszak announced: "With Wilhelm Knabe, our regional association is losing a defining personality from the founding years and the decades that followed." Knabe played a key role in shaping the party.
In a profile of the Mülheim district association, which led Knabe as honorary chairman, Knabe left an indication of what he wanted to achieve with his political work.
He would like "that younger people continue my work for the environment," it says there.
