Two matriculation winter maths will take place this week and open the high school exam season, following last week's oral matriculation in English.

About 146,000 students, close to half of the high school students, are expected to take the exams tomorrow (Monday) and Wednesday.

At the request of Education Minister Yoav Galant, the government has exempted the exams from closing the education system and they will be held in schools.

Five months have passed since the beginning of the school year, but following the closures, the high school students studied for only 20 days, about one-fifth of the number of school days.

The rest of the time they studied remotely, and as a result many of the students feel unprepared despite the adjustments made by the Ministry of Education in the matriculation exams.

However, the possibility of accessing the second date in April somewhat eases the concern.

"I feel I am not ready enough," admitted Hilal Abu Din, a 12th-grade student from Tel Aviv-Yafo who took a matriculation exam in mathematics on Monday.

"Although there is now the possibility of doing a second date in April, which we once did not have, but it does not really help. Most of the year we studied zoom, and that is not effective learning."

146 thousand examinees in mathematics

  • 3 units: about 87,000 students

  • 4 units: about 33,000 students

  • 5 units: about 26,000 students

According to Abu Din, distance learning has deprived students of effective learning assistance.

"We didn't get the personal treatment we really needed to get to adulthood. I know they did drop out of the exam material compared to previous years, but it still doesn't really help."

Uri Zarbiv, a 12th grade student at Yeshivat Amit in Ashdod who will be tested in 5 maths units tomorrow, also agrees that learning to zoom is a big challenge. "I feel prepared enough for the matriculation exam on Monday.

Preparing for the zoom exam, including learning to zoom, is challenging and requires high will and self-discipline, "he explained." I studied with my partner, who graduated last year, and practiced a lot outside of the zoom frame.

In my opinion, the material for the exam is fair, in addition to the fact that the Ministry of Education has given us a greater choice of questions. "

Teach black dice

Not only for the students the last year has been particularly challenging.

Teachers, who try to increase pace and instill in students motivation for matriculation, have difficulty adapting to change.

"The preparation for this year's matriculation was different from last year and from any other year before the corona," said Naomi Remdi, a math teacher at ORT Yuvali Ariel High School who will be serving 12th graders tomorrow for matriculation.

However, she said, "Most students have become accustomed to the situation.

The material condition I had to teach was fair in my opinion.

Took down a few topics and I was able to focus so that my students could pass the matriculation in a dignified manner. "

Although most of the year did not meet the students, Remedy believes they are ready for the exam." This is the situation, and we all tried to adapt to what is there, focus on an exact goal. We have made progress.

Today I am calm and happy that my students are approaching on Monday and finishing this year as heroes in the mathematics profession. "

"I did not meet most of the students at all."

Dr. Tali Deborah, a math teacher at Katzenelson High School in Kfar Saba, also described the differences from the routine. “For 20 years I was used to teaching in class.

This year I had to sit in front of a screen for the first time with 30 cubes, some of which are black, when I had not met most of the students at all, and reinvent myself.

"" When I am in class teaching my senses sharpen, I move in the classroom and use my voice to arouse interest.

"Every noise in the room gives me feedback on what's going on in class," she added. "Behind a screen, all of these things are not reflected.

It is very difficult to get a real picture of what is happening to the students through the zoom. "Dr. Deborah noted that her students report problems concentrating on the zoom, difficulties in preparing homework and submitting assignments and a lack of personal connection.

"In classical teaching there are students who if I do not physically approach them during class and tell them to take out the book and notebook, they will not do it themselves. How am I supposed to do it behind a screen when the child is in his private home, in front of the cell phone, TV and all the distractions around him?" .

How to prepare for the exam?

The Supervisor of Mathematics Teaching at the Ministry of Education, Nirit Katz, says that the exam at all levels of education is fair and adapted to the focus that has been transferred to the schools. The exam is structured in a graded manner to allow the student to open of the exam safely. As a rule, a student who has studied well will not be surprised by the exam.

wanted to emphasize that the score in this exam is cumulative, so it is worth trying to solve all the exercises in order to accumulate the maximum possible points. She added that it is advisable to make a time division in advance to solve each exercise, depending on the length of the original exam, and to take advantage of the extra time given to all students to go over the answers and test them.

Examiners in

4 and 5 study units were

told that it would be better to start answering low-difficulty questions, and gradually move on to higher-difficulty questions. According to her, this year there are more choices in the exam and the deliberation between the various options can lead to confusion and lost valuable time, so it is advisable to know in advance which areas you control, in order to focus on them. They are also advised to pre-allocate time to solve each exercise, depending on the length of the original exam, and take advantage of the extra time given to all students to go over the answers and test them.
