The district, that of Yvette Trachtenberg, was ideal for hosting a square whose name pays homage to the "Righteous Among the Nations".

This Sunday morning, at the corner of avenue de Verdun and rue Buessard, in Ivry, a new public garden opened its doors.

Located at the foot of the new residence built by RATP Habitat, it now bears the name “Square des Justes among the Nations”.

And thus pays tribute to this resistance fighter from the neighborhood who had hidden Jewish children to save them from deportation.

Dentist, Yvette Joseph-Henri had married Mr Trachtenberg, a Jew, in March 1939. She is part of the list of 4,600 Righteous of France.

It is to her and to all the Righteous that the participants in the inauguration paid tribute this Sunday.

"We are thinking of all these ordinary and great resistance heroes who listened only to their conscience and saved these children by taking immense risks for them", recalled the representatives of the French Committee for Yad Vashem and of the association for the memory of Jewish children deported from Ivry.

Walkers discovered a 1,500 square meter square, located close to the future T9 tramway, and fitted out by RATP Habitat to be returned to the city.

Families will be able to enjoy games for young children, composting bins, an inclusive water fountain or many blocks of natural stones to sit on and enjoy the sun.

All around are 34 social housing units, 50 for social home ownership, three artists' studios and a large room that could become a medical practice.

As part of his Memorial Week, this Sunday, Ivry also affixed a plaque in the Maurice-Thorez departmental park "in memory of the Gypsies who were victims of the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis".

"We are proud of the memory work carried out in Ivry for more than 15 years and of its transmission to the children of the city," concludes Philippe Bouyssou, mayor (PCF) of Ivry.

All this contributes to ensuring that such events never happen again, to put a barrier between us and racism and exclusion.
