What the BeurFM / Israel case reveals

2021-01-31T20:52:45.715Z

FIGAROVOX / INTERVIEW - Rose Ameziane and Malik Yettou, hosts of "L'Actu Otherwise" on Beur FM, were sanctioned by the management of the radio after a meeting with the Israeli ambassador. For Rose Ameziane, the channel gave in to pressure from communitarians and anti-Semites.

Rose Ameziane is president of the

Movement for the Emancipation of Territories

and acts as a political columnist.

Beur FM sanctioned you after meeting with the Israeli ambassador.

How did the director of the antenna motivate this sanction?

Rose Ameziane:

She motivated this sanction by email by informing us in these terms: "for your information to both, the program will not be repeated at the start of the school year and this not before a good debrief of our editorial line ... . ”.

It was stated bluntly that meeting the Israeli ambassador and his spokesperson did not respect Beur fm's editorial line.

We were criticized for a simple photo on a tweet from the Israeli embassy and especially for having met the ambassador and his spokesperson in order to discuss the peace agreement between Israel and Morocco.

Why did you decide to make this matter public?

In your opinion, did the director of the antenna give in to community pressure?

Rose Ameziane:

We are convinced that she has yielded to an active and influential minority which continues to harass and put pressure.

We felt in her sanction that she seemed to want to perhaps avoid coming up against a certain political and communitarian fringe.

Those whom the President calls "separatists".

At first we felt indignation and secondly we found it so incomprehensible, brutal and violent that we decided to talk about it.

It was obvious to us that the actions of the management had to be denounced.

There was no question of accepting the unacceptable.

I can't believe the majority of beur FM listeners accept this.

We wanted to drop the masks.

We were the victims of threats and insults without any reaction from management.

This same direction is now trying to save appearances by shameless lies by affirming that they have always had the project of making the show.

Except that in reality the management never wanted to contact them, and that they did not get involved with the Embassy until after the article appeared.

At no time have neither the anti-racists nor the people claiming to be fighting racism come to our defense.

BeurFM is a community radio… Wasn't it paradoxical to want to resist communitarianism on a community channel?

Should we see anything in your sanction other than an editorial disagreement?

Rose Ameziane:

BeurFM is indeed addressing a community but not communitarians at least not to my knowledge

That a community radio speaks to a community is not shocking.

On the other hand, for a radio station to give in to communitarian pressure, it is unacceptable.

Above all, you have to be clear on what an editorial line is.

If the editorial line is not to meet the Israeli ambassador and his spokesperson to discuss an agreement between Morocco and Israel, it is appalling.

We did some work upstream before building this subject and it seemed serious to us to meet the Israeli ambassador.

Moreover a few weeks before BeurFM had received the Embassy of Azerbaijan in full armed conflict with Armenia, which however seems to be their editorial line.

Let's not be fooled, this is barely masked anti-Semitism or discrimination against a nation, but both of us are unbearable.

Let's be clear, we have to see something other than this pretext for the editorial line.

It's a whole mechanism behind it's deeper, it's all this separatist nebula on social networks tirelessly tempting you to influence management with threats, insults or invective.

We must not give in to their pressure, we must fight them with unwavering will.

The leadership has ceded rather cowardly to those fanatics of networks who make no secret of being notorious anti-Semites and to whom the very existence of the state of Israel is an affront.

If the director gives in, it is because she endorses and shares these ideas.

Why did you get involved with this radio at the start?

Rose Ameziane:

We hosted two shows "political Monday" and "the news otherwise", two talk shows.

The objective was to bring a plurality of opinions within the radio.

We were keen to offer societal debates without jargon.

At the beginning, we had carte blanche from the director to animate our debates, it was the spirit we found that great.

We therefore decided not to censor anyone, to let all political ideas be expressed, to open the antenna to all sensibilities while framing the debates and interventions.

And then this radio has a history, it is also the heritage of children of immigrants thirsty for expression and to take part in the debate.

You have been called "service bougnoules" by social networks ...

Rose Ameziane:

There is a will beyond attacking ideas, attacking people, the will to harm, weaken or destroy all those who do not think like them.

There are insults but there are also threats, we were told that we were going to pay.

I say it clearly these threats are serious because they are addressed today to the whole profession.

At no time have neither the anti-racists nor the people claiming to be fighting racism come to our defense.

We must be very vigilant and not give up, we must lead a real fight against these active minorities.

And more generally when we claim to be proud to be French, an evil minority treats us or "service bougnoules".

This obviously refers to an identity question not sufficiently explored in our country.

Your show, "L'actualité autre" was extremely pluralistic.

You have invited personalities of personalities classified on the right such as Charles Consigny, Charlotte d'Ornellas or Natacha Polony.

Why this choice and is it also one of the causes of your sanction?

This was one of the causes of our tension with management.

The sanction fell after the meeting at the Israeli embassy.

For them the red line was the Israeli embassy and it had been crossed.

The point of no return had been reached.

And if we decided to invite personalities classified on the right, it was a desire to assume to offer relief, nuance in the debates of society to our listeners.

It was essential for them to be able to hear differences because debating with people who are in substantial agreement is no longer a debate!

It is time for these community radio stations to realize that their listeners are a reflection of current French society, diverse and plural, and that the lines have long since moved.
