Two animal traps were found in Hong Kong within two days. One of them was located in Cheung Po Village, Yuen Long. Two villagers placed a 4-meter-long giant iron cage and were finally arrested after hunting; the other was stepped on by a wild boar by a garbage dump in Lai Chi Kok. After the trap, he was suspected of being hunted by Sanhan and died tragically on the spot.

According to the AFCD, from 2020 to January this year, the AFCD has seized and removed 226 animal traps and no prosecutions have been taken.

During the same period, the AFCD received a total of 5 reports of wildlife injuries or deaths caused by traps. Species involved include wild boar, bark deer and porcupine. In 2 cases, wild boars were seriously injured and required humane treatment.

The Fisheries and Conservation Department continued that at the end of last month, it received a case of the discovery of a trap in Changpu, Yuen Long. During the investigation, no suspects were found. The department has immediately removed the trap and posted a notice on the scene.

The Fisheries and Conservation Department is also following up the incident of someone placing a trap near the Lai Chi Kok garbage dump. If there is sufficient evidence, the offender will be prosecuted.

According to the "Wild Animal Protection Ordinance" (Chapter 170) ("Ordinance"), no person shall possess hunting equipment or use hunting equipment to hunt any wild animals without permission.

Once convicted, offenders can be fined up to 50,000 yuan.

In addition, if hunting or possessing any "protected wild animals" specified in the Ordinance, the maximum penalty is a fine of 100,000 yuan and imprisonment for 1 year.

The Fisheries and Conservation Department stated that it has been committed to combating illegal hunting of wild animals and patrols the countryside from time to time, especially where hunting equipment has been found.

If a trap is found, the AFCD will remove it immediately and place a notice at a conspicuous place on the scene to remind the public that using a trap will violate the law and not to try the law.

If there is sufficient evidence, the AFCD will prosecute the offender.

In addition, the AFCD also arranges joint operations with the police and related animal groups from time to time to inspect places where hunting equipment has been found in the past.

If members of the public find suspected illegal hunting activities, they should not deal with it by themselves and should immediately call 1823 to notify the AFCD to follow up.

If the situation is urgent, please call the police immediately at 999 for help.
