Michael Hoffmann (CDU) resigned from his office as city council chairman in Magdeburg on Monday evening, according to the CDU.
Last week, SPIEGEL reported on his Facebook posts, whereupon there was massive criticism of Hoffmann from the other parties, but also from the CDU.
In a post he wrote, for example: “Now it's enough.
That reminds me very badly of the communist system.
Was there still any funds left from the Central Committee of the SED?
FREEDOM instead of Merkel. ”He also shared an article that said Merkel said the corona pandemic had slipped away from the government.
He had previously posted a similar post on Facebook, which caused a sensation within the CDU Saxony-Anhalt.
In it he shared a video on the Russian state broadcaster Russia Today, in which the virologist Christian Drosten can be seen.
Hoffmann commented: “I don't believe a single word that guy anymore.
In addition, it is controlled by the Merkel Central Committee. "
He also called on Facebook, SPD, Greens and left-wing politicians who want a red-red-green government to be brought to a political court to prevent.
AfD stands behind Hoffmann
Several parties have already called for resignation in Magdeburg.
The General Secretary of the Federal FDP, Volker Wissing, called for a reaction from the new CDU chief Armin Laschet.
"The incidents in Saxony-Anhalt are symptomatic of the internal turmoil in the Union," Wissing told the "Rheinische Post".
The incumbent CDU leader Marco Tullner protected himself from interference from Berlin.
In relation to the "Magdeburg Volksstimme", however, Tullner distanced himself clearly from Hoffmann.
Only the chairman of the AfD city council faction, Frank Pasemann, stood behind the CDU politician.
Pasemann, who is also a member of the Bundestag, was excluded from the AfD because of right-wing statements.
At the state level, the Greens and the SPD had repeatedly clashed with their coalition partner, the CDU, over allegations of insufficient demarcation from the AfD.
Part of the Christian Democratic state association would like to work with the AfD, including two parliamentary groups in the state parliament.
Recently the Kenya coalition in Saxony-Anhalt had argued over the question of increasing the radio license fee and almost broke up again.
When the then state chairman Holger Stahlknecht brought up the possibility of a minority government in an interview, which would have made a cooperation with the AfD likely, he was thrown from the cabinet by Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff.
