Civilians, anonymous victims of the conflict in the Sahel

The violence that has destabilized the area for a decade has resulted in the forced displacement of two million people.


At the end of January, the Malian armed forces (Fama) triumphantly announced the death of a hundred jihadists during Operation Eclipse, carried out jointly with the French armies.

A victory, after the loss of five Barkhane soldiers in late December and early January.

A few days after the operation, however, the Fama deplored the loss of six men in Boulkessy and Mondoro.

But this macabre accounting is incomplete.

Almost all of the victims of the war in the Sahel remain anonymous.

Civilians are forgotten in a complex conflict that pits Sahelian states, primarily Mali, against a myriad of rival armed groups, ranging from jihadist terrorists to local rebellions.

During the last three months of 2020, 182 civilians were killed in Mali, 175 wounded and 163 kidnapped, according to the latest report from Minusma, the UN mission in the Sahel.

During the previous quarter, 375 civilians died, 450 were injured and 93 abducted.
