Some people get into a downward spiral due to Corona.

A waiter from Munich tells how he was first hit by short-time work, then housing and finally job losses.

  • Corona,

    including

    lockdown measures

    , also puts people in

    financial difficulties

    in Munich *

    .

  • A

    waiter has just followed

    an extreme

    downward spiral

    - he is facing homelessness.

  • It started with

    short-time work

, now he has lost his job and cannot afford an apartment.

Munich -

Martin H.

is at the end of his tether.

"I see no ray of hope, no perspective, nothing at all," says the 51-year-old waiter.

The voice of the otherwise so collected man becomes louder.

He is desperate because he has really tried everything.

But: nothing helps.

“It's like a vortex that pulls me down.” The man from Munich

lost his job as a

result of the

Corona crisis

, could no longer afford his apartment and is afraid of being out on the street soon.

Dumped ice cold!

Munich and the Corona crisis: Small employees often have to go first

Martin H. is not an isolated case.

A survey by the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association Dehoga among 1,380 hospitality entrepreneurs showed that three quarters of all hoteliers and restaurateurs questioned see their livelihoods at risk.

Almost a quarter are already specifically considering giving up operations.

Of course, the crisis hits

small employees

first - as Martin H.

“I was a waiter in a restaurant downtown,” he says.

In the first lockdown, in the spring of last year, the 51-year-old was put on short-time work.

“I only earned 950 euros then.

But the rent for my

two-room apartment

in Moosach was 800 euros. ”He lasted a few months with his savings.

In July the waiter decided to move into a cheap boarding house in Moosach.

Then his odyssey began.

“At first I only paid 700 euros there, then it got more and more expensive,” he reports.

Finally, Martin H. moved to another

Moosach motel

at the beginning of December

- but last week operations were stopped at short notice due to insufficient utilization.

From now on Martin H. was forced to look for a new place to stay.

Now he lives in a hotel where he pays 850 euros in rent.

“I had no other choice, but I can't really afford it.

I urgently need to find something new! ”He could not find accommodation with friends or family, because:“ They have little to live with and hardly any space around them. ”He does not want to be a burden to others.

Corona crisis hits Munich waiters: "I really don't want to go to the men's home"

At the end of 2020, his contract in the restaurant was not extended either.

Now he lives on

1050 euros of unemployment benefits plus social assistance

.

Of course, all of this is nerve-wracking.

“I'm looking for a new job, applying to tobacco shops and gas stations,” he says.

But there is no vacancy anywhere.

And it keeps going downhill.

“I can't get a loan from the bank because I don't have a job.

In the social welfare office they say I should go to the men's home - but I really don't want to go there! "

The 51-year-old worked all his life.

He wants a normal life, he doesn't want to get further into the downward spiral.

Like many others in the restaurant business, Martin H. asks himself: “When will this finally end?”
