The Prime Minister's Office wants the Begin Heritage Center to award the "Begin Prize" to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - even before the elections at the end of March.

This is despite the fact that the Begin Heritage Center has decided to waive the award in the current year, in light of the Corona's limitations.

This is against the background of the joining of the son of former Prime Minister Menachem Begin - Benny Begin - to Gideon Saar's "New Hope" party.

The "Begin Prize" is an annual prize awarded by the Begin Heritage Center every Hanukkah holiday since 2002, as a sign of recognition of a contribution or achievement for the State of Israel.

Among the award winners to date can be found the astronaut Ilan Ramon, Rabbi Elimelech Firer, Miriam Peretz, MDA, ZKA, Squadron 13 and other personalities and organizations.

To date, no figure from the political world has received the award.

In the run-up to the last Hanukkah holiday, due to the corona epidemic, the center's executive committee has decided to give up the 2020 award ceremony and the ceremony that accompanies it.

In recent weeks, however, the Begin Center has begun to press for a change in the decision.

Likud officials told Walla!

NEWS that former Minister Moshe Nissim, who serves as chairman of the award committee, is working to award the award to Netanyahu, and in coordination with his bureau.

According to the same sources, in the Begin Center - and in the environment headed by him, Chairman Herzl Makov, fear that the move will damage the center's state image and provoke political criticism during the election period. Sources in the Prime Minister's Office claim that it , And that no pressure was exerted on their part to promote the award.

"The board will convene in the coming days to discuss the issue"

Moshe Nissim refused to answer questions on the subject and referred to the response of the Begin Center, where they also denied that there was involvement of the Netanyahu bureau, and confirmed that this was an idea raised by one of the members of the award committee.

"Every year, the Menachem Begin Heritage Center awards the Begin Prize to a person or organization that has worked exceptionally for the people of Israel or the State of Israel. The winners are determined by an external committee of public figures, who are not employees of the center or members of the board," the center said.

"The award is given every year on Hanukkah at the time when Menachem Begin received the Nobel Peace Prize," the Begin Heritage Center explained.

"This year, due to Corona's limitations, the Board of Directors decided on October 21, 2020 to cancel the event held every year by a majority of people. The idea was recently raised by one of the committee members that the award should be presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu But we have not yet discussed.

However, the center's response indicates that the initiative to award the prize to Netanyahu may nevertheless ripen until the election.

"Since the board has made the decision to suspend the award this year, it will convene in the coming days to discuss the issue. The board convenes on the initiative of the head of the center and therefore of course there is no basis for determining that he opposes this convention," they clarified.

"It is also important to emphasize that there was no request from the Prime Minister's Office or anyone on their behalf, and certainly no pressure was exerted on their part."

The Begin Heritage Center, a state memorial center in memory of the Irgun leader, former Likud chairman and sixth prime minister, was established at the end of Netanyahu's first term in the 1990s.

It operates under a law enacted in 1998, which sets out its purpose and mode of financing - from donations and the state budget.

The center's budget in recent years has been NIS 15-10 million a year, which is used to operate the center - which has a museum, library, and archive and hosts events, seminars and conferences, educational and information activities.

The Likud also holds events at the center from time to time, and Netanyahu himself visits it at least once a year, attends events or holds events and statements of his own.

At the head of the center, since its establishment, is Herzl Makov - who was previously the director of the Prime Minister's Office, Yitzhak Shamir, and maintains close ties with Netanyahu and his family.
