The winner has been determined: the jury selected the design by the Berlin architects “Ackermann + Renner” and the landscape planner “raum + zeit” as the winner of the competition for the center of Neuried with the new town hall.

Neuried

- The new face of Neuried: The competition for the design of the town center was about nothing less.

Mayor Harald Zipfel was accordingly relieved that a result is finally available.

It was very close.

And architect Thomas Meusburger also made it clear that the jury had not made it easy to award the first three places.

The chairman of the jury said that the “content” was discussed “very intensively”.

70 architectural offices applied

Monika Beltinger from the supervising office Lars Consult had already made a preselection.

70 architecture firms from all over Europe applied.

After eight had already been placed, the remaining twelve participants were determined by lottery.

A total of 18 then managed to submit their designs on August 26, 2020.

These were submitted to the competition jury for assessment at the end of January, which spent two days trying to reach a decision.

The chairman of the jury, Meusburger, explained on Tuesday evening which criteria ultimately spoke for the winning designs.

City hall flooded with light

With their plan of a light-flooded four-storey town hall and a spacious, “well-proportioned” square in front of it, the concept by architects Schaudt from Constance and landscape architects Siegmund and Winz from Balingen convinced the jury.

The arrangement of the conference room on the first floor and the associated town hall balcony also met with broad approval.

However, the jury was critical of the lack of “available space in the new center of Neuried” and the almost fully glazed town hall.

This could heat up too much in summer.

The space reserves in the town hall are also “too small”.

Ultimately, the design made it to third place.

Urban planning concept is convincing

With the runner-up, the chairman of the jury “indulged” for the first time.

The architectural office Puppendahl from Recklinghausen and the landscape architects Grabner, Huber, Lipp from Freising scored particularly well with their urban planning concept.

The new town hall has a single-storey building in front of it with a conference room and wedding room, which reduces the available open space, but also offers different quality of stay, according to the jury.

There are several “courtyards” that allow different uses.

One point of criticism was the insufficient building density, which did not make use of the potential at this location.

"Great harmony" between buildings

Ultimately, the judges were most impressed by the design by the Berlin architects “Ackermann + Renner”, who entered the competition together with the Landshut landscape architecture firm “raum + zeit”.

The planners have added a second, striking trapezoidal building to the new town hall, a commercial property.

According to Meusburger, there is a "great harmony" between the buildings.

The jury positively noted that the new town hall also - as required - has development potential in the form of expansion areas.

The fact that the official building becomes quite large as a result was also one of the criticisms of the design.

However, the differentiated facade design prevents the new town hall from appearing like a massive block.

Most of them were enthusiastic - even if only at second glance - by the interesting facade design.

The architects have provided brick here.

Although it is unusual for the location, it ranges from white muddy to pitch black.

The councilors represented in the jury were initially open-minded.

The same applies to the division of the four floors inside.

The ground floor and first floor are to be higher than the other floors.

Plus points for residential development

The overall concept also scored plus points for the residential development in the north of the 11,000 to 13,000 square meter area.

The buildings are arranged in the form of a courtyard.

You saw that you couldn't "slam" everything, said the mayor.

It also needs freedom.

What still stands in the way of realization: the finances.

Landscape architect Tobias Nowak from "raum + zeit" is probably not the only one hoping that an investor will soon be found for the commercial property.

Then, the jury is sure, the local council and citizens should also be convinced of the plans.
