The government announced yesterday (2nd) that the minimum wage will be frozen at 37.5 yuan. The Rights and Interests Committee of the Federation of Trade Unions petitioned outside the government headquarters today (3rd) to protest the freezing of the minimum wage, criticizing it for favoring the business sector and reducing grassroots purchasing power.
The Federation of Trade Unions believes that the increase in the minimum wage should catch up with inflation and raise it to 39.1 yuan. If the government insists on freezing the minimum wage, it should provide wage subsidies to basic-level workers who receive the minimum wage.
Leung Ziying, a member of the Rights and Interests Committee of the Federation of Trade Unions, criticized that the Secretary for Labor and Welfare, Luo Zhiguang, explained that the decision to freeze the minimum wage was unreasonable on the grounds of "a deep economic recession and high unemployment", saying that the current minimum wage is 37.5 yuan per hour. "Lower-level workers" can only earn a monthly salary of RMB 7,800 after working 26 days a month, and the current minimum wage coverage rate is only 0.7%, and the number is about 20,000. The Federation of Trade Unions urges the government to improve the minimum wage adjustment mechanism, link the adjustment of the minimum wage to the median social wage, and implement a yearly inspection. The legislation provides for an annual review of the statutory minimum wage level.
