Huge noise around 30 km / h everywhere in Munich: Greens proposal angered Reiters SPD

A speed limit of 30 km / h should apply on Munich's streets.

That is what the Greens are calling for.

Only main traffic arteries would be excluded.

The SPD is deeply pissed off at the advance.

Munich - Purify the forest of signs, fewer emissions, more safety for cyclists and pedestrians - from the perspective of the Greens, there are many arguments in favor of Tempo 30 as the standard speed in the city area.

At the moment, however, this requirement can only be imposed in sensitive areas such as residential areas, schools with hotspots or for noise protection reasons.

Freiburg applied to the federal government for a model test in December.

The German Association of Cities also welcomes the initiative.

According to the Greens, Munich should now follow suit.

"Tempo 30 as the standard speed would be a clear signal for the traffic turnaround: people in front of the car", says city chairwoman Ursula Harper.

She refers to studies according to which a speed limit of 30 would not only make the streets much safer, but would also have a positive effect on the quality of life of the citizens.

Tempo 50 should only be allowed on main traffic arteries such as the Middle Ring.

Munich / Tempo 30: "A comprehensive regulation could significantly purify the forest of signs"

In Munich * there are already more than 300 Tempo 30 zones, so that 80 to 85 percent of the road network is included.

"A comprehensive regulation could significantly purify the forest of signs," says the Green City Councilor and chairwoman of the Schwanthalerhöhe district committee, Sibylle Stöhr.

The Greens refer to an assessment of the former district administration officer Wilfried Blume-Beyerle (independent), according to which the regular speed 30 would reduce the number of traffic signs from 12,000 to 4,000.

Further advantages in the opinion of City Councilor Paul Bickelbacher: “Cycling is becoming much more attractive.

Drivers would have fewer acceleration and braking maneuvers, which worsen the flow of traffic. ”Overall, Munich would be“ cleaner and quieter ”.

Munich: SPD parliamentary group leader feels "deceived"

The initiative of the Greens has meanwhile triggered a huge house row in the town hall coalition.

"We do not support any anti-car ideology that plays off road safety, quality of life and mobility of the population against one another," explains SPD parliamentary group leader Christian Müller.

He even speaks of “blind car hatred” by the Greens.

In addition, the move was not coordinated with the SPD.

Anne Hübner, together with Müller parliamentary group leader, is annoyed on Wednesday via Twitter that she feels deceived by the Greens.

Müller believes that a nationwide Tempo 30 regulation will harm the city more than it will help it.

He fears creeping traffic in residential streets to shorten routes.

Munich: Is there a threat of more through traffic in the residential areas at 30 km / h?

CSU parliamentary group leader Manuel Pretzl also sees this danger: “If the speed limit is 30 almost everywhere, the residential areas are threatened with more through traffic.

Drivers will then no longer take the fastest route, but the shortest.

At the same time, there is a risk of overloading the few remaining main traffic arteries. "

Pretzl and Müller believe that MVG buses would also be slowed down.

And Pretzl suspects: “A reorganization would also involve a lot of effort and costs.” Both the CSU and the SPD say that targeted speed reductions make sense: “But we are already doing that today: on 85 percent of the streets in Munich applies Tempo 30 ", explains Müller.

OB Reiter is pissed off about the action of the Greens

This is also emphasized by Mayor Dieter Reiter, who is pissed off about the actions of the Greens.

He sees no reason for a general speed limit 30. Not to coordinate with the coalition partner on such an important issue is "extremely unprofessional and not suitable for demonstrating sustainable governance".

The Greens parliamentary group leader in the city council, Florian Roth, defends himself: In terms of content, the position of the Greens on Tempo 30 is nothing new, so the force of the criticism surprised him.

“We don't want a tempo of 30 everywhere.” He sees no reason for a coalition crisis.

Interest groups such as ADAC and the Bund Naturschutz (BN) also assess this dispute differently.

The automobile club does not consider Tempo 30 to be expedient, neither for safety nor for environmental reasons - because alternative traffic in residential areas is to be feared.

The BN, however, speaks of a "big hit".

Tempo 30 improve the flow of traffic and reduce emissions.
