A curious sight is currently to be found in Adelshofen: instead of the real Marian column, you only see a picture of it in the center of the village.

The reason: The statue was enclosed to protect it from the weather.

It could soon be easily moved.

Adelshofen -

Even before Mayor Robert Bals (WG ANL) took office, the Marian column at the intersection of Pfarrer-Lampert-, Ring- and Pfaffenhofener Straße was a topic in the local council.

The question was how to design the intersection in the course of the planned expansion of the roads.

At that time the tenor was: The island in the triangle of streets should be left as it is.

But according to Bals, new information is now opening up, which is why he wants to bring the topic to the council again.

There is the dilapidated condition of the sandstone pillar.

"The monument is currently open to the weather and badly damaged by the weather," says the town hall chief.

The sandstone plinth was attacked and the paint and gilding were chipping off on the statue.

Bals had already documented the damage before winter.

In order to better protect the around 140-year-old figure of the Virgin from the cold season and the road salt on the street, it was now enclosed.

And in a particularly attractive way.

The shell shows the image of the statue - at least that is how it has not completely disappeared from the center of the village.

The town hall chief had the idea for this unusual enclosure.

“It looks nicer than a wooden box,” he says.

The film was printed in an online print shop, to which Bals still has contacts from his boyhood.

The printed photo is from him.

The film cost around 130 euros, he explains.

Plus a little more for printing.

According to Bals, the dilapidated condition of the statue of the Virgin generally means that the area is no longer a nice place for pedestrians and cyclists to linger.

In order to obtain the necessary street and curve widths, the municipality would also have to acquire 260 square meters of land if the column remained at its current location.

In addition, a close pruning of the linden tree behind the monument is necessary.

And last but not least, Bals thinks the current location is not very reverent anyway.

His suggestion: the column should be moved on the island so that it can be approached from Pfaffenhofener Straße.

By rotating it and moving it slightly, the column would, in Bals' opinion, be more accessible and more beautiful for the citizens to perceive.

“In addition, the monument would not be exposed to the weather as badly by far.” The mayor can also imagine that the statue will be put in a kind of showcase after its restoration.

In the opinion of the town hall chief, the linden tree could be transplanted as part of the village renewal and the relocated monument could be framed by two new plantings.

Overall, the area to be over-planned for road expansion would also be significantly smaller.

“This would drastically reduce the construction costs, but above all it is hardly possible to purchase the necessary land here,” says the mayor.

The necessary renovation of Pfarrer-Lampertstrasse and Pfaffenhofener Strasse would then no longer be possible in accordance with the road construction guidelines.

Since the Marian column is a monument, the monument office will also have an important say in any relocation.

First of all, Bals wants to get the Adelshofen town council's okay.

At the next meeting it will be discussed how the monument is to be positioned on the island and thus as a community in relation to the monument office.
