Lamborghini: The History of the Car Brand
After the end of World War II, there was a lack of agricultural tractors everywhere in Italy.
This called on the engineer
Ferruccio Lamborghini
, who had repaired military vehicles during the war on the Greek island of Rhodes.
He founded the
Lamborghini Trattori
company in 1949
and converted old military vehicles into tractors.
Within a few years he managed to rise to one of the most successful tractor manufacturers in Italy.
In 1963, Lamborghini expanded its business to include automobiles and opened a car factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese near Bologna.
A year later,
the
brand's
first
model,
the 350 GT, went
into series production here, with its twelve-cylinder engine even surpassing the cars of its major competitor
Enzo Ferrari
.
Lamborghini's breakthrough came in 1966 with the 350 hp Miura model, which reached 274 kilometers per hour.
Lamborghini gets wings
Lamborghini
caused a sensation
with the Countach, the first mass-produced car with scissor doors that opened up like wings.
Almost 2,000 vehicles were built between 1974 and 1990.
The Countach consolidated the global
image of
the
Lamborghini
car brand
as an exclusive luxury label and status symbol.
The attempt to open up new customer groups with the relatively cheap Urraco failed and brought Lamborghini into economic difficulties.
The brand changed hands several times.
From 1987 to 1994 it belonged to the American group
Chrysler
and from 1994 to 1998 to the Indonesian organization
MegaTech
.
Lamborghini sold this to the German
Audi AG in
1998
.
The luxury vehicles are still manufactured at the headquarters in Sant'Agata.
The Lamborghini Museum is also located here, with an exhibition of all
models
.

Lamborghini: an animal image
Lamborghini
cultivates the
image
as a wild bull, which also makes up the company logo.
Most of the
models
bear the names of famous fighting bulls.
Murciélago survived a bullfight in Cordoba in 1879, despite thrusting his lance 24 times, and was then pardoned.
He founded the breeding line of the Miura bulls.
According to company founder
Ferruccio Lamborghini
, the
pure untamed power of the bulls should
also be found in his vehicles.
