Two leaders of the opposition Nicaraguan University Alliance (AUN) were detained this Thursday by government forces, the opposition Civic Alliance and relatives of the detainees denounced.

The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy of Nicaragua denounced on its Twitter account the "new arbitrary detention of Santiago Fajardo, also a member of AUN, an organization that is part of our Civic Alliance."

In addition to Fajardo, they arrested Enrique Cuadras, another AUN leader.

The authorities detained Fajardo at his home in the city of Masaya, 30 kilometers from Managua.

In a video recorded during the police operation by Roberta Montenegro, Fajardo's wife, the moment of the arrest is observed.

The arrests of Fajardo and Cuadras come after the National Assembly, controlled by the ruling Sandinista Front, approved a reform.

The change in the Code of Criminal Procedure allows the detention of a person between 15 and 90 days.

This, while being investigated for an alleged crime.

This Wednesday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central America and the Dominican Republic questioned that reform.
