The nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1, and multiple media reported on the 3rd that a number of cross-party lawmakers in the United States nominated the Hong Kong democracy movement to compete for this peace prize.
In letters obtained by Reuters and other media on the 3rd, Republican Senators Marco Rubio (Marco Rubio) and McGovern (Jim McGovern) and other 9 senators and House of Representatives pointed out that more than 2 million Hong Kong residents were in June 2019. On the 16th, they took to the streets and became one of the most participated demonstrations in history. Therefore, we hope to recognize their bravery and determination to inspire the world through the Peace Prize.
They also mentioned that they hope that the Nobel Committee will continue to pay attention to those who fight for peace and human rights in China, and believe that Hong Kong's democratic movement deserves praise this year.
At the same time, it was pointed out that the award should broadly cover everyone who has been fighting for human rights and democracy in Hong Kong since 1997.
Rubio also nominated the Hong Kong Democracy Movement for the Peace Prize with a number of cross-party lawmakers last year.
In addition to the Hong Kong Democracy Movement, two Norwegian parliamentarians nominated the founding chairman of the Hong Kong Democratic Party and Senior Counsel Martin Lee to compete for the Nobel Peace Prize.
They pointed out that Martin Lee has devoted his life to democracy and human rights issues, and mentioned that he is currently facing charges. The two MPs hope that through the nomination, the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong can be inspired to promote freedom worldwide.
