The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department announced that the African swine fever virus was detected in pig samples from a local pig farm.

When the department inspected a pig farm in Yuen Long and took pig samples from the pig house for inspection, it found that 6 pigs on the farm were positive for the African swine fever virus.

The AFCD has destroyed 240 live pigs in the farm and stated that this case will not affect the operation of the local slaughterhouse, nor will it affect the overall supply of live pigs in Hong Kong.

The Fisheries and Conservation Department emphasized that African swine fever is not a common infectious disease between humans and animals and will not be transmitted to humans. Therefore, it will not pose a food safety risk. The pork can be eaten safely after being cooked, and the public need not worry.

The AFCD stated that the sample came from a licensed pig farm in Wong Nai Tun, Yuen Long.

The AFCD has immediately banned the pig farms from transporting any pigs until further notice.

According to the Fishery and Conservation Department, the test results of pig samples from other pig houses in the pig farm were all negative. During inspections by the Fisheries and Conservation Department staff, no abnormal health conditions were found. As strict biosecurity measures have been implemented on the farm In addition to the risk of infection and the fact that the pig houses are separated structures and are not connected, AFCD, after consulting relevant international experts, initially believes that further observation and testing can be done at this stage without the need to destroy pigs in other pig houses.

The farm is undergoing thorough cleaning and disinfection.

Staff of the AFCD have immediately inspected the other three farms within three kilometers of the farm concerned, and no abnormalities in the health of the pigs were found.

For the sake of prudence, the AFCD has also temporarily prohibited these farms from transporting pigs, and conducted pig sampling and testing to ensure that the farms are not infected.

As for other pig farms three kilometers away, the Fisheries and Conservation Department has not received reports of abnormal pigs.

The AFCD staff will step up inspections of all local pig farms to ensure that the pig farms properly implement good biosecurity measures, and continue to closely monitor and early detect abnormal pigs and whether the pig farms are infected.
