Alonso Ancira, former president of the board of directors of Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA), was extradited this Wednesday morning from Spain to his country on accusations of corruption, confirmed a source from the businessman's defense team.

According to the source, Ancira left the Palma de Mallorca penitentiary at 7 in the morning, where he had been held since November.

He sailed for Mexico less than three hours later.

The extradition was received with surprise by his lawyers, the same source told CNN, since the judicial authorities did not notify that it was going to take place this Wednesday.

According to the source, the defense was only aware that the Spanish government approved the extradition at the end of December.

The decision was never published on the La Moncloa website.

It is customary for the executive to disclose the Council of Ministers agreements there.

In response to CNN's question, the Ministry of Justice explained that the Council of Ministers agreed to his delivery on December 1.

Although they did not know on what date the extradition would take place, the defenders of Ancira, Manuel Ollé and Javier Sánchez, presented in recent weeks a letter in which they requested that their delivery to Mexico be deferred due to the exceptional situation that that country is experiencing in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic and the risk it would pose to Ancira's health.

According to the source consulted by CNN, the defense highlighted that the former president of the AHMSA board of directors is diabetic and suffers from cardiovascular problems.

In addition, this source ensures that, despite the extradition, this letter has not yet been resolved or responded to.

What is the accusation against Alonso Ancira in Mexico?

The Spanish National Court agreed to extradite Alonso Ancira on November 13, 2020. It did so after confirming that the crimes for which Mexico was requesting correspond with Spanish law.

The Mexican justice accuses Ancira of money laundering, bribery and tax fraud.

One of the keys to the accusations against Ancira revolves around the acquisition by Pemex of Agro Nitrogenados, a fertilizer producer that belonged to AHMSA and for which Pemex paid US $ 275 million while Emilio Lozoya was CEO of the Mexican state oil company .

Lozoya, who led Pemex between 2012 and 2016, denied having received bribes for that acquisition.

Faced with questions about the price paid by Pemex, AHMSA declared that the operation complied with all the supervision and control requirements established by the internal rules of Pemex and the regulations of the Mexican State.

Ismael Oliver, Ancira's first lawyer before the Spanish justice, affirmed at the end of May 2019, at the time of his arrest, that his client had no responsibility for the crimes of which he is accused.

He claimed that he is the victim of a "vendetta", a political persecution.
