Uighur women held in camps in western China are being systematically raped, sexually abused and tortured by police and prison guards, according to a BBC investigation, which included first-hand evidence.

It is estimated that more than a million Uighurs and other minorities are being held in camps in Xinjiang Province.

Torsnoyi Ziawdon, who fled Xinjiang after her arrest and now lives in the United States, told the BBC that women were taken out of their cells "every night" and raped by a masked Chinese man or men.

She said she was tortured and then raped in groups on three different occasions, each time by two or three men.

Another woman, of Kazakh descent, said she was forced to strip Uighur women and handcuff them, then leave them alone with Chinese men.

"They paid money to choose the most beautiful young women prisoners," Gulzira Olhan said.

A former prison guard in one of the camps, who spoke anonymously, described torture and deprivation of food from the inmates.

The previous administration of former President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on Chinese officials and companies linked to the persecution of Muslims in Xinjiang, and the administration of new President Joe Biden has made clear that he will take a similar aggressive approach against Beijing on this and other issues.

The new administration was quick to adopt the previous administration's assertion that China was committing genocide in Xinjiang.

In the UK, Foreign Minister Asia at the Foreign Office, Nigel Adams, told Parliament the inquiry showed "clear malicious acts".

He said London was leading the international effort on the issue and that it would continue to work with the United States and Europe to put pressure on Beijing.

China's foreign ministry has denied the allegations, accusing the BBC of "false reporting without a factual basis".

He said those quoted in the investigation are "players who spread false information" as "has been proven many times".

China denies persecuting the Uighurs, claiming the camps are training centers aimed at eradicating extremist Islam and separatism.

According to her, the person who was held in the same facilities has already "completed his training".

Last year, a report by a German researcher published by a research institute in Washington accused China of forced sterilization, forced abortions and forced family planning measures against Muslims in the province.
