The Hague Tribunal: We have the authority to review US sanctions on Iran
The judges rejected Washington's claims that the issue was outside their jurisdiction, in a decision that Zarif described as "victory."
The Biden administration expressed disappointment with the decision, saying they would later prove that the Iranian petition had no basis.
A final ruling may be made in a long time

The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled yesterday (Wednesday) that it has the authority to discuss Iran's demand to lift US sanctions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad described it as a "victory" achieved three years after Tehran's petition.
She accused former US President Donald Trump of violating a 1955 friendly treaty between the two countries when he withdrew from the 2018 nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on its nuclear program.
The previous administration in the United States said the sanctions were necessary because Iran posed a "serious threat" to world peace, but the judges rejected its objections.
The president of the tribunal, 'Abd al-Qawi Ahmad Yussef, said that "we have found that the tribunal has the authority to examine the request submitted by the Islamic Republic of Iran."
Washington expressed disappointment, saying that the issue is outside the jurisdiction of the Tribunal operates within the United Nations. "The next phase of this case explain why Iran's claims have no basis," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ned Price.
A final decision regarding sanctions from the court The Hague, set up after World War II to resolve conflicts between UN member states, may only be accepted in a few months, or even years.

After Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal signed between Iran and the superpowers in 2015, Tehran activated the 1955 "Friendship Charter," signed long before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the pro-American Shah regime and severed ties with Washington.
Iran claims that the return of the sanctions has caused "distress and suffering" and ruined the "lives of millions" due to the economic difficulties they have caused.
This is the second ruling in favor of Iran on this issue, after a court in The Hague ordered the United States in 2018 to ease sanctions on humanitarian goods as an emergency measure while continuing to hear the petition as a whole.
In response, Washington officially ended the friendship treaty that year
"This is another legal victory for Iran," Zarif tweeted.
"Iran has always fully respected the law. It is time for the US to meet its obligations." Zarif asked the EU on Monday to help coordinate a return to the nuclear deal.
Earlier yesterday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani rejected changes to the nuclear deal and rejected calls to expand and include countries in the region. The
new United States President Joe Biden has expressed support for a return to the deal but insists that Tehran must return to fully fulfill its terms and repeal the steps taken in protest of the sanctions imposed by Trump. The new administration says former Republican president's moves back like boomerang, after Iran Moved away from the nuclear deal and only increased its opposition to American interests.
