In the Saarland, several current ministers are fighting for direct mandates in the upcoming federal election.
In addition to Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU), her party colleague and Minister of Economics Altmaier now also wants to represent a Saarland constituency in the Bundestag.
Altmaier wants to run again for the Saarlouis constituency, the dpa news agency confirmed in a report in the "Bild" newspaper.
Altmaier won the constituency in 2017 against Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD).
The 62-year-old Altmaier has been a member of the Bundestag since 1994 and Minister of Economics since 2018.
Maas had also indicated a new candidacy in the past.
In the 2017 Bundestag election, Altmaier received 38 percent of the vote, Maas got 32.1 percent.
Kramp-Karrenbauer had also announced on Thursday that he would run for the direct mandate in Saarbrücken in September.
According to the "Saarbrücker Zeitung", it can also be assumed that the politician is on one of the top positions on the CDU state list in Saarland.
Altmaier is a close companion of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who will not run again in the autumn election.
Most recently there had been quarrels about Altmaier's Ministry of Economic Affairs within the CDU.
After the party conference of the Christian Democrats, the defeated candidate for the party chairmanship, Friedrich Merz, offered the new CDU leader Armin Laschet that he could become Minister of Economics in the Merkel cabinet.
Merkel had immediately made it clear that she wanted to hold on to Altmaier.
