Freising's CSU member of the Bundestag, Erich Irlstorfer, describes the debates about the search for a nuclear waste repository as “inevitable”, but warns against “actionism” and criticizes the free voters.

Freising

- The CSU member of the Bundestag Erich Irlstorfer describes the debates surrounding the search for a suitable nuclear waste repository as “inevitable”.

Because the “Interim Report on Sub-Areas” by the Federal Association for Final Storage has fueled this discussion in the district because, as is well known, the northern area of the district has been declared suitable in principle - like 54 percent of the federal territory.

Irlstorfer attributes the fact that he is now accused of not having given enough information to the upcoming federal election campaign.

And: There is "no reason for hectic or actionism", so the MP in the FT interview.

Mr. Irlstorfer, what exactly is the state of affairs in the search for a successor for Gorleben?

The Gorleben Committee was concluded in 2017, after which the Federal Agency for Final Disposal was founded.

Its mission is to find a solution for nuclear waste storage by 2031.

The first step is this interim report, which says that at first glance, 54 percent of the federal area is suitable as a repository.

Using the funnel method, areas are then gradually filtered out until a repository is found in 2031.

The next steps are so-called sub-area conferences - three of which the first will take place this weekend.

It will only be about the methodology of the further procedure.

Around 1,600 municipal representatives will take part, as well as an 18-person national advisory committee.

Are you there too?

The staff in my office will take turns attending the conference all the time.

In addition, Günther Beckstein, who is part of the advisory committee, is my direct contact, so that I am always informed about the state of affairs.

I'll have a talk with him on Monday.

That is the usual day-to-day business of a member of the Bundestag.

I don't need a request from Karl Ecker (former mayor of Au and designated Bundestag candidate for free voters; editor's note) that I should take care of it.

I already know that myself.

And if Mr. Ecker wants to know something, he can call me.

How great are the "dangers" that Bavaria or the northern district of Freising will have a nuclear waste repository?

The granite deposits in the Bavarian Forest and the Fichtelgebirge have a certain charm, but a suitable location has to meet a lot of requirements.

For example, it has to remain unchanged for a million years - whoever wants to judge it.

In the now following elimination mode, you have to get to ten percent of the federal territory between 2023 and 2025.

The goal of the Bavarian state government, and this is also stated in the coalition agreement with the free voters, is that there will be no repository in Bavaria.

But that will be a technical and geological decision, even if the Bundestag has to decide in the end.

Karl Ecker is apparently supposed to be stylized as the savior of the Hallertau.

Erich Irlstorfer

How should the district behave now?

I find it bizarre when demonstrations are already being organized and people are thinking of setting up citizens' groups.

There is no need to rush.

Hustle and bustle, Angela Merkel is right, is something for beginners.

Now is the hour of non-partisan cooperation.

And that's what I offer.

The procedure will be completely transparent, I will report the state of affairs at the mayor's meetings, the district administrators and also the district council, if so desired.

I will have the usual information policy - based on facts, not as glass ball reading.

So the free voters in particular use this for the election campaign, do you think?

Yes, because there are only FW mayors in the six affected communities.

And Karl Ecker is apparently supposed to be stylized as the savior of the Hallertau.

It annoys me that representatives of parties that are very close to the anti-nuclear movement do not defend themselves locally against the fact that Bavaria could be a possible location.

I find that unspeakable of the first order.

The population must know what is going on and be informed transparently.

But there is no reason to be active.

You have to stay vigilant, but not act hectically.
