Despite the corona risk, the Freisinger Tafel continues to work.

The employees risk a lot in the process.

  • Many senior citizens work at the Freisinger Tafel.

  • They belong to the largest risk group and some of them have not yet been vaccinated.

  • Nevertheless, they have decided to continue to distribute food to those in need.

Freising

- “It's a tricky thing,” admits Gundi Kürten, Vice Chairwoman of the table, openly.

After all, the club itself has had bad experiences with the virus.

At the beginning of the pandemic, one member died after a corona infection.

The club temporarily stopped issuing goods in the first lockdown.

But then the food bank developed a protection concept, and now, in the second lockdown, the motto, according to Gundi Kürten, is: “We hold out.” The distribution of food is continued twice a week.

Many employees are around 80 years old, and many of them have not yet had a vaccination, reports the deputy chairwoman.

At 78 years of age, she also belongs to the absolute risk group.

“We're afraid that someone will bring us an infection.

But there are just so many people who need our help.

So we hope that everything will go well. "

FFP2 masks are designed to protect employees

In order to protect the approximately 50 employees at the Tafel as well as possible, all customers are obliged to wear FFP2 masks when goods are handed out.

"Everyone who comes will receive such a mask from us free of charge," reports Gundi Kürten.

This is possible because the association not only received a grant from the Bayerische Tafel, but also received many donations from private individuals.

"It's great how the population supports us."

The Tafel has set up half-hour time slots so that not all of the needy come to the food counter on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the same time.

"Since customers have to register with us, we were able to write to everyone and order them specifically", reports Kürten.

Overall, the social hardship has increased in the current lockdown, reports Kürten.

Among other things, there are no free lunches at schools for children from socially disadvantaged households.

"Something is emerging here," fears Kürten.

"In the past week alone, we have six new customers."

Support of the students is "worth gold"

The deputy chairwoman of the Tafel is also very happy about the help of young people.

The students of the Food Sharing Initiative, who stepped into the breach for the Freisinger Tafel in spring 2020, are still offering active support.

Kürten: "The helpers are really worth gold."

That was too much effort at work: because he wanted to score points with his boss and got him cocaine, a Moosburger now has to go to jail.

It has been closed since February 1st: The Wiesender bakery has closed its branch on Obere Hauptstrasse in Freising.

But the shop shouldn't stand empty for long.

Graduates at Freising grammar schools have been taking alternating classes since Monday.

Nobody is really satisfied with that.
