Protests began after a former prisoner was shot dead in Tamra by Ahmed Hijazi, a 22-year-old nursing student who was shot in an exchange of gunfire between criminals and police.

During the incident, during their stay in the city, the police noticed four suspects firing at a house, where a man who was blackmailed by them apparently lives.

Following that shooting, police decided to place an ambush near the scene.

When they arrived at the scene armed with automatic rifles, the police called for them to stop and those in response opened fire at them.

A shootout ensued and as a result one of the suspects was killed, his friend was injured and two fled.

Two gunmen who were shot at the scene were also injured in the shooting - Hijazi, who was shot dead, and Dr. Muhammad Aramush, who was moderately injured. Two other suspects fled the scene. DIP began investigating the incident.

Arza Kutner, 62, from Tel Aviv, one of the "mothers against violence" activists who came to express solidarity with the protesters, told Walla!

NEWS because "it hurts and we come to support any public that suffers from police violence. So when it is a member of the Ethiopian community, so here in Umm al-Fahm when violence is directed at Arabs."
