Risk of flooding: in Ile-de-France, the banks of the Marne are in orange vigilance

2021-02-05T20:34:06.210Z

Announced on the rise after the rains expected this Saturday, the level of the Marne will be scrutinized this weekend in Seine-et-Marne, Seine-Saint-De

Residents of the Marne, between Condé-Sainte-Libiaire downstream from Meaux (Seine-et-Marne) and Charenton-le-Pont (Val-de-Marne) via Gournay-sur-Marne and Noisy-le-Grand (Seine-Saint-Denis), could have their feet in the water if they walk along the waterway this weekend.

Even at home if they really live by the river.

The Marne was indeed placed, this Friday afternoon, on orange vigilance on this section by the information and forecasts service Vigicrues.

"The flood forecasting service has placed the Marne section, from Condé to Charenton, on orange alert for a risk of flooding generating significant overflows likely to have a significant impact on collective life and the safety of people and property" , inform the prefectures concerned.

Climate: floods, floods… Why is it raining so much?

"If the levels will stabilize over the entire section until Saturday morning, they will start to rise again, especially at the Condé-Sainte-Libiaire station

(Editor's note: which measures the height of the Grand Morin, a capricious and very reactive of the Marne in periods of prolonged rains)

, following the precipitations of Saturday and the reaction of the rivers to these rains ”, specifies Vigicrues.

"Nothing alarming" for the moment

Located at the confluence of the Grand Morin and the Marne, the town of Condé-Sainte-Libiaire is the most exposed to this rising water level.

But the mayor (SE), Fabrice Marcilly, wants to be reassuring.

"The rue de Couilly is already under 4 to 5 centimeters of water and has been closed as a precaution but there is nothing alarming", assures the first magistrate.

A little further downstream, in Lagny-sur-Marne, we are also ready for a possible rise in the level of the river.

“Gateways were already installed several days ago.

The Chemin du Ru Bicheret and the Allée des Goujons were blocked to traffic as well as the Quai de la Gourdine, which was submerged in places under 30 centimeters of water.

There is nothing to worry about at the moment but we will be vigilant on the impact of the rains which will fall this Saturday and could cause the Grand Morin and the Petit Morin to swell upstream.

These two rivers that flow into the Marne could raise the water level from Sunday.

We will be vigilant and teams are on standby to possibly install additional bridges ”, explains the chief of staff of the mayor of Lagny-sur-Marne, Pierre Tebaldini.

At La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, the river reached 3.94 meters this Friday evening;

it should reach 4.05 meters overnight from Saturday to Sunday.

Pumping stations and flood walls

In Gournay-sur-Marne (Seine-Saint-Denis), the orange vigilance puts the city's agents on alert.

At 7 p.m. this Friday, the Marne had risen to 4.80 meters according to Vigicrues.

Still far from the 5.74 meters reached during the big floods of early February 2018, when the town was nicknamed "Gournay-sous-Marne".

But the bad weather announced this weekend does not encourage serenity.

"The services of the prefecture announce a rise in water levels of up to 5.30 meters between now and Monday, communicates the municipality.

As a reminder, the anti-flood wall protects us at a height of 5.55 meters.

According to the prefecture of Val-de-Marne, if there is a rise in water from the tributary of the Seine, it is on the Bry-sur-Marne and Perreux side that cellars could be flooded.

In Nogent-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne), this Friday, the Department of Environmental and Sanitation Services (DSEA) activated the Tilleuls anti-flood station to prevent possible overflows from the river.

Throughout the department, 21 anti-flood pumping stations are activated.
